Why This Transgender Teen's Video is Going Viral

With her wavy blonde hair and bright pink lipstick, Corey Maison looks like any other confident, happy teenage girl.

But the 14-year-old was born a boy, and has shared her heartbreaking battle against bullies in a video for US social action campaign The BULLY Project.

The Detroit teen details her journey through a series of cards, revealing she has always loved painting her nails and playing with dolls, and was bullied so badly her parents decided to home school her.

“One of the kids told me I should kill myself because no one liked me anyway. He told me no one would miss me if I was dead.”

The bullying didn’t stop when she left school. After her mum let her wear high heels and a dress to the shops, Corey hit rock bottom after facing harassment from strangers.

“A woman in the store started taking pictures of me with her phone. Another lady was pointing and laughing. I felt so stupid. Like a freak. Like a misfit.”

Luckily, this story has a happy ending.

After realising she was transgender, Corey saw a therapist and started on female hormones when she was 14 so she could go through puberty as a girl.

She even had the confidence to go back to school where she was allowed to use the girls’ bathrooms – and where her inspirational video was filmed.

Sending out a message to anyone else being bullied that it’s only temporary and everything will be ok, Corey flashes her infectious smile and ends her video with the words: “You are incredible, you are beautiful, you are worthy and you are loved.”
