Zara has pulled a children’s top that resembles the striped pyjamas worn by Jewish inmates of Nazi concentration camps.

The ‘Sheriff’ top features vertical stripes and a six-pointed star on the upper left chest – unfortunately echoing the horizontal-striped concentration camp uniforms.

The Zara top’s ‘Sheriff’ gold star motif closely recalls the yellow Star of David patches printed with the word Jude (German for ‘Jew’) worn by prisoners in camps like Auschwitz.

Zara’s parent company Inditex swiftly issued a statement after an online protest gathered momentum.

“The item in question has now been removed from all Zara stores and Zara.com," said a company spokesperson.

“The garment was inspired by the classic Western films, but we now recognise that the design could be seen as insensitive and apologize sincerely for any offence caused to our customers.”

This isn’t the first time Zara has been accused of anti-Semitism. In 2007 the retailer apologised after unhappy customers expressed outrage over a handbag featuring four swastikas.
