Photographs of a Chinese grandfather modelling women's clothing, posted online by his granddaughter, have gone viral.

Liu Xianping's granddaughter opened a small clothing store, Yuekou, with four of her fellow college graduates in May this year.

According to a report published at the Offbeat China website, Ms Lv took the photos as a joke when her grandfather tried on clothes that he was helping to unpack at the store.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about the modelling shots is that Liu manages not to look ridiculous.

His granddaughter's clothes appear to fit him well, and make the most of his thin pins.

In the photos the unlikely online star poses in a range of cute jackets and sweaters matched with coloured tights and frilled scarves.

Offbeat China claim the enormous popularity of the photographs reflects the social diversity that has developed in China over the last 40 years.

And while the photos may seem quirky, good old family values were behind their genesis.

"Modeling for the store is helping my granddaughter and I have nothing to lose," Liu told reporters in China. "We were very happy on the day of the shooting. I’m very old and all that I care about is to be happy."
