An artist's impression of Andrej Pejic wearing the pretzel tribute hat

Androgynous Aussie model Andrej Pejic found himself in the midst of a millinery tussle this week when the Victoria Racing Club stepped in to censor the Melbourne local's choice of race day hat.

Pejic was set to wear a design by milliner Kerrie Stanley, which was inspired by Princess Beatrice's infamous royal wedding hat.

However Swisse, who had commissioned Stanley to design Pejic's Oaks Day hat, received an eleventh hour emergency call from the VRC calling the whole thing off.

Beatrice's beige be-bowed hat, fondly dubbed 'the pretzel' by some fashion commentators, was designed by famous Irish milliner Philip Treacy, who happened to be this year's VRC international style ambassador.

Treacy reportedly objected to his most famous design being subjected to the tribute treatment.

It appears that the pretzel hat (which has been less kindly likened to a toilet seat) is a touchy subject for the flamboyant designer.

A number of celebrities sported Treacy designs at Melbourne Cup, including Mischa Barton and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, while Kim Cattral donned a Philip Treacy at Oaks Day.
