Jennifer Lawrence Channels Gothic Gwyneth Paltrow at the Oscars

I think I speak for, well… myself, anyway, when I say that Best Actress nominee Jennifer Lawrence’s look at the 2016 Academy Awards was not her finest.

I initially commented to my co-workers that the custom Dior gown reminded me of something Britney Spears might wear to a formal occasion.

But on further inspection, I realized the dress was actually closer to another ill-received gown that had walked a previous Oscars red carpet: Gwyneth Paltrow’s gothic Alexander McQueen gown, which she wore to the awards show in 2002.

With the dresses’ sheer bodices (totally see-through in Paltrow’s case, an illusion in Lawrence’s), tank-like straps, full black skirts, and dramatic trains, it’s impossible not to see the similarities between them.

Of course, 11 years after wearing her questionable McQueen, Paltrow admitted that it might not have been her smartest fashion choice.

“There were a few issues,” she said.

“I still love the dress itself, but I should have worn a bra, and I should have just had simple beach-y hair and less makeup.”

Will Lawrence come to regret her Paltrow-esque pick as well?

We may just have to wait until 2027 to find out.
