Gigi Hadid defends Taylor Swift's squad

They take selfies at awards shows, host A-list parties and ban each other from discussing their personal lives on camera - so is it any wonder Taylor Swift's girl squad has been likened to the cast of Mean Girls?

According to Gigi Hadid though, this sentiment is far from the truth - in fact, their friendship group is all about empowerment.

"We talk about it a lot; it's a conversation we often have," Hadid told Elle Canada. "We want to be the generation and the group of friends known for supporting each other.

"'Squad Goals' is a big social-media thing right now, and that's what we want to inspire in other groups of friends -- to be proud of the power you all have when you're together, which can be amplified so much by each person. That's what has been cool about everyone's willingness to be there for each other."

Hadid said the girls were adamant that they'd be known as the group that deliberately didn't exclude anyone.

"We don't want to be like other generations who are infamous for their cattiness," she says. "That was cool and it worked for them and they were great. We just want to be the new generation."

Considering recent rumours which suggest Swift and her boyfriend, Calvin Harris, might be on a break, it seems the singer might need her girl squad now more than ever.
