I love scooping out the fashion at the American Music Awards. Unlike some of the other Award shows in Hollywood, you can always count on musos to rock it out, take risks and go BIG (or short, as it so happens!)

This year marked the show’s 40th anniversary and an epic line up of stars. And if there’s anything stars know how to do, it’s sparkle - gold, silver, sequins and lace were THE looks to look out for on the red carpet, as hemlines and blood pressure were raised to new heights.

Metallic and short

Is there any award this girl can’t win?! Not only did Taylor Swift walk away with most popular country artist, but her stunning sheer gold lace Zuhair Mrad mini-dress stole the award for best dressed. Moving away from the butter-wouldn’t-melt-in-her-mouth curly hair, the leggy star went for an edgier blunt fringe that oozed grown up glamour.

She may be sans Seal, but Heidi Klum got my gold seal of approval as she showed off her toned pins (39 never looked so good!) in a gold lacy Alexandre Vauthier mini-dress, gold Christitan Louboutin
for Vauthier shoes and big gold but oh-so-chic Lorraine Schwartz earrings.
The split might have gone to the heavens but it was saved by a runway worthy high neck.

Doing Aussies proud, Collette Dinnigan dressed presenter (and George Clooney squeeze) Stacey Kiebler. The sparkly pewter mini-dress showed off the former wrestlers endless golden limbs and evolving high fashion style. Can I please have her trainer's number?

Hayden Panettiere may play a Nashville star , but she was big city sophisticated in her sparkly, slightly longer ladylike version of the popular mini metallic look. The petite multi-talented performer got some extra height with her killer silk satin platform stilettos.

Kelly Rowland combined the metallic trend with a slight tribal design, in her army green and gold embroidered and mirror embellished dress from the 2012 collection by Naeem Khan Dall.

Best Dressed:

Taylor Swift- high fashion, super sexy and somehow age appropriate. Go girl!

Worst Dressed:
Nikki Manaj – lime green, ill fitting and wacky weave. Neither controversial or chic. but somewhere in the middle. We like you weird Nik’s…don’t hold back!

Most improved:

Ke$ha – sure her hair did make her look a little like Gwen Stefani and the shoes should have been nude or metallic, but Ke$ha looking uncharacteristically pretty and ladylike in her nude lace mini dress and polished platinum 20s inspired hair.

Emmys trend: aquatic style
