It's difficult to resist the charms of Miranda Kerr. It's not just the glossy hair and big blue eyes, it's her warmth and friendliness that wins you over. She may be a Victoria's Secret model and global celebrity, but the girl from Gunnedah has managed to stay down to earth despite her fame.
Her public persona has made Kerr an easy target for some, particularly when she's quoted discussing sensitive topics like pain relief during childbirth (2-year-old Flynn was delivered drug-free). Yet no matter whether you're a fan or a critic of Kerr, it's impossible to deny that her stratospheric success is the result not just of good genes and artfully placed dimples, but years of hard work and an unwavering commitment to Brand Miranda. The 29-year-old is always positive, whether she's talking about her work, motherhood, her marriage to actor Orlando Bloom or health, clearly one of her passions.
Y7 Lifestyle caught up with Kerr at a breakfast at Bondi Beach where the model was promoting Clear Scalp and Hair Beauty Therapy, one of her numerous sponsorships. To kick off our chat, I asked Miranda about her lovely locks.
Your gorgeous hair is one of your signature features. How do you keep it healthy?
I really do believe that it's really important what you eat, it really makes a difference with your skin and your hair. Eating almonds, avocado, cooking with coconut oil, really for me has an effect on the quality of my skin and my hair.
What I like about Clear is that is nourishes the scalp and has Nutrium-10 and it feeds the scalp. I was always of the philosophy that we need to feed the ends, but it's about feeding the scalp. I wasn't able to find a certified organic shampoo and conditioner that really worked for me and gave me the results that I needed for my job. It's about that balance at the end of the day. I have my certified organic skincare line, but I'm all about the 80/20, so it's a little indulgence for me, using this haircare.
I know you're a big fan of coconut oil - you cook with it, eat it. Do you use it on your hair and skin too?
Yeah, both. I actually like to get massages with coconut oil.
Have you ever been tempted to do anything radical with your hair?
Yeah, I’ve wanted to, especially when I was pregnant. I wanted to chop my hair really short...I felt an urge to just chop it off. But for my job my clients prefer me to have long hair.
What's the toughest thing for you about modelling?
I'm really blessed to have done this job for the amount of time that I have. I was first discovered when I was 13. I finished school, and then I started travelling. The first country I travelled to was Japan, that was when I was 18. I celebrated my 18th birthday in Japan, which was quite memorable; I was quite fascinated by the different traditions and the culture, it was so completely different to Australian culture.
What I like about modelling is that it has given me that opportunity to travel and experience different cultures, work with creative people, and now it's given me a voice, and with that voice hopefully I can do good things with it. Like yesterday I was promoting Kid's Helpline, which I'm an ambassador for. It's really nice to be able to use your voice especially for a good cause like that.
Did being a mother yourself influence your decision to support Kid's Helpline?
I've been involved for a long time just doing little bits here and there. Now I've been named the official ambassador, but I've been involved with them for many years. It's a great cause, and I've always been one to help support children.
You're the mum of a gorgeous 2-year-old...do you have any advice for working mums?
Don't be too hard on yourself! Women, I think we can feel like we need to do it all and be it all. What's important is that we do the best we can, and just make time for yourself because when you do make time for yourself you give back more as a mother, you give back more to your work. Just taking time – I like to just literally lay in the grass and Flynn can be running around me and jumping on me, or when he was a baby laying with me, and watch the clouds pass. Doing those sort of things, taking those moments, is really important.
Sometimes it can be overwhelming being a mother and wanting to do the right thing, and they are your priority. For me, it’s always "is this decision in the best interest of my son?", and you just go from there. It's about balancing time and creating structure, so when you are together, it is quality time, and then when you are at work, you are present and you are at work. That mother's guilt thing, it's something that's always there but you just learn to manage it, and the way I manage it is knowing when I'm home I have that quality one-on-one time with Flynn.

Has Flynn hit the terrible twos?
He is a really joyful spirit. He's very fun. He'll say to me "Mummy, let's jump for joy".
That’s so cute…
I do this thing at home where if anyone is in a bad mood, or we’ve had a bad day, cos everyone has their challenges, I say "come on, let's jump for joy" and I get the whole household jumping for joy, whoever’s around, they think I'm mad, but it really works. So now he comes up to me and says “Mummy, jump for joy!” So now if he starts to have a little thing I say "come on Flynn, let's jump for joy!"
You grew up in country NSW, a world away from Flynn's childhood in New York and LA. Is there anything from your childhood you really want Flynn to experience?
The love and the nurturing is what's most important, it doesn't matter where you are. For me it's really important that he's with me, or he's with Orlando, that he's not just left with the nanny. That's important for me.
Orlando is a really great dad, and I love being a mum. We balance it out - last year I had chunks of time off in New Zealand, where I was just being a wife and a mother and it was great. Of course I was overseeing my brand Kora Organics; as the Managing Director there are decisions I have to make on a daily basis but it doesn't really interfere so much because I can do it from home.
What's your favourite way to relax?
Laying on the grass watching the clouds! You know why? Because for so long I've done yoga and meditation and I've realised the most important thing is to do nothing. If you want to relax, watch the clouds pass by if you’re laying on the grass, or sit in front of the creek, just doing nothing and having those still moments is what really rejuvenates the body.
You're turning 30 this year...do you have anything planned?
I'm trying to work it out, where I'm going to be, but I'm definitely having a celebration. That's next on my list, to figure out a really fun party with lots of great music…I love music! I love dancing, I also like karaoke. The people that are really important to me will hopefully be able to make it.
What's on for the rest of 2013?
I have my contracts and they're put in place, so I know what's happening between now and December. I have chunks of time off, chunks of working, chunks of time off…
You've been in Australia for a few weeks now...
11 days, and I'm going back to see my boys - I'll be there in 2 days.
