Television show Modern Family is facing a wave of backlash after a character was killed off an episode which aired in the US this week.

Fans had been warned for months that a ‘significant character’ would be dying on the show, but once their identity was revealed in the highly anticipated episode, many viewers were left scratching their heads.

Beware, there’s some serious spoilers ahead for those who haven’t watched the Halloween episode yet.

The character farewelled was Delia ‘DeDe’ Pritchett, played by Shelley Long.

As the ex-wife of Jay Pritchett, and Claire Dunphy and Mitchell Pritchett’s mother, she appeared in less than 10 of the over 200 episodes of the comedy drama that have gone to air in its time.

Many viewers quickly took to social media afterwards, expressing their frustration and confusion after the ‘significant character’ to die was someone they actually aren’t that familiar with or attached to.

Modern Family outrage:

“When they said there’s going to be a death on #ModernFamily I thought it was going to be a major character, not someone who’s been on a few eps (sic),” one fan wrote on Twitter.

#ModernFamily so it’s only Dede??? Got me shook for a second,” another tweeted.

The popular show, starring the likes of Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Sofia Vergara and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, is now in its 10th season.
