Beauty bootcamp
It’s time for a beauty product audit – yep, your make-up has a use-by date, so check the packaging and chuck anything that’s past its peak. And if the last time you wore that purple mascara was a high-school dance, it’s probably time for it to go, too! Maria Gabriel, creative director of Make Up Store, shares her “keep or cast-off” rules.

  • Replace your mascara every three months.
  • Eyeliners should last up to three years. Run the tip through some antibacterial brush cleaner and sharpen pencils frequently.
  • Depending on ingredients, most lipsticks and balms should last one to two years.

Nail detox
After last year’s nail art frenzy, you might want to take a chance to give your fingers and toes some downtime. Give your nails a good buff, slather in a nourishing cuticle oil and if you must add polish, choose shades that are free from formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). These nasties can make your nails weak and even discolour them permanently.Best tressed
Products can build up in your mane, leaving it lank and weighed down, so use a clarifying shampoo
and conditioner or a gentle scalp scrub to get it squeaky clean again. Depending on how oily your hair is and how many products you use, aim to deep clean once every two to four weeks.

Keep it clean
Dewy-skinned Kate Bosworth, the new ambassador for SK-II, says, "My number-one rule is I always remove my make-up before bed. It doesn’t matter how late it is." Her tip is an oldie, but a goodie.

During the day your skin is exposed to pollution, and wearing make-up to bed clogs the skin’s natural exfoliating process. Leaving your mascara on can also be harmful as it makes eyelashes rigid, meaning they are more likely to fall out or break if you rub your eyes.

Sisley Eau Efficace Gentle Make-Up Remover $160, SK-II Facial Treatment Gentle Cleanser $90
Scrub up
This is the time to commit to cleaning your skin regularly and with the right products. You should be exfoliating all over at least once a week to encourage cell turnover, remove dull dead skin and promote a natural glow from head to toe. Always use gentler products on your face.
HydroPeptide Anti-Wrinkle Polish & Plump Peel Kit $99
Brush with glory
If you use your foundation brush or make-up sponge every day, wash it once a week to prevent bacterial build-up. Use a specialised brush cleanser or a gentle shampoo, and air-dry them hanging upside down so
you don’t splay the bristles.
Artiste brush cleaner $14.95, Elizabeth Arden blushbrush $45
Use protection
Care for the skin you’re in! This starts with a regular routine – and it’s never too late to start cleansing, moisturising and protecting. Sunscreen is an absolute must in Australia, so slip, slop
and slap every day.

If you’re headed to the beach, it’s worth using the super-powerful just-released SPF 50+ products.
