Sam Smith has opened up about his struggles with weight loss during an interview with Australia's 60 Minutes on Sunday.

The 22-year-old singer - who recently shared his incredible 7kg weight loss via Instagram - admitted he was "controlled" by food in the past.

"When I was at school and wasn't having a great time or when music wasn't going very well. I would eat, eat," said the Lay Me Down singer.

"Eating would make me feel better, when I felt lonely I would eat."

Sam went on to reveal he's more offended by comments regarding his weight than hateful slurs about his sexuality. "If someone called me fat, that affects me way more than someone calling me a f*****," he explained.

"I think just because I've accepted that, if someone calls me a f*****, it's like, I am gay and I'm proud to be gay so there's no issues there."

The British Grammy winner first credited the author of Eat. Nourish. Glow, Amelia Freer, for his dramatic weight loss via Instagram last month. "Three weeks ago I met a woman who has completely changed my life," Sam wrote. "Amelia Freer has helped me lose over a stone in 2 weeks and has completely transformed my relationship with food."
