Eminem Rapture Review

Eminem will never get old. We all know his hits and we’ve all, at some point in our lives, slurred the lyrics to Lose Yourself.

“Palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy... so on and so on something, something, mum’s spaghetti.”

Am I right?

The world’s biggest selling hip-hop act brought his lyrical genius to Australia for the third time in 13 years last week and the self proclaimed Rap God has still got it.

FAMOUS was there to witness the 41-year-old’s (yes, he’s really that old) almost flawless flow as the headline act of Rapture Tour in Sydney.

Being in an Olympic Stadium, there’s an added element that you don’t find at smaller shows – the immensity of seeing this guy you grew up killing it on stage is a feeling like no other.

Eminem, or Marshall Mathers as he sometimes prefers, weaved in and out of his classic songs during his 90-minute set. The list of 26-tunes included new cuts Survival and Bezerk, older anthems like Mosh, and a medley of his three biggest hits My Name Is, The Real Slim Shady and Without Me. You could see the eye rolls from us older folk in the crowd when he launched into cheesy songs like the cringe-worthy collab with Bruno Mars Lighters. Argh. We won’t lie, the guy lost his swag for a moment there a couple of years back.

Gone are the days of the hockey mask wearing, chainsaw wielding psycho in orange overalls we loved and feared more than a decade ago. Gone are the days of the rapper’s 2001 trip Down Under where Marsh admits to not remembering a thing because he was in the grips of an addiction to prescription pills.

Nonetheless singing along to Stan with 60,000 other people at ANZ Stadium was pretty all time awesome – even if you are fighting with them to get the first train home after the show!

No other rapper in the world could pull off a show that size and hold the crowd in their grip for every last second of the performance. The atmosphere was palpable especially when Em was joined by his Bad Meets Evil band-mate Royce Da 5’9” for a performance of Fast Lane.

Only one little nitpicking let-down - there was no Superman and no Shake That Ass which we have to admit left us feeling a just tad disappointed.

But overall it was a hell of a show and the real Slim Shady is still standing tall.
