Miley Cyrus Twerks it for Sydney

Some might say Miley Cyrus is a bad influence. What, with all that tongue wagging, those high-cut sequined leotards (ahem, DI$COUNT UNIVERSE is genius) and gyrating dance moves?

Please. Miley Cyrus is one of the best entertainers in the biz right now, and her show in Sydney on Friday night was irrefutable proof.

Yes, she may have dropped more F-bombs on stage than our boozy uncle watching the grand final. And yes, she spat water all over her fans - AKA smilers in the front row at Sydney’s Allphones Arena - but the girl’s talent is incredible.

Fans squealed as the 21-year-old opened her first Sydney Bangerz show by sliding down a plastic tongue that led out of a huge digital projection of her own face – whose eyes were rolling in the back of her head like she'd had a few too many party treats.

Her onstage props - which include dancing teddy bears, foam fingers, fake booties, puppets, cars, giant joints and lighters and a giant floating hot dog (that she rides like a boss) - are much more entertaining than anything artists like Rihanna bring on stage.

We had a #throwbackthursday moment when Miley sang her 2010 hit Can’t Be Tamed while dancing around a giant inflatable husky – an homage to her dog Floyd, who passed in April this year.

Meanwhile, the kaleidoscopic audio-visuals were as good as the onstage antics. Think everything from Walking Dead themed Miley hooning around on a jet ski, to stunning black-and-white footage of our girl getting all S&M, Terry Richardson style. There's so much happening on the big screen, you barely even notice the many, many outfit changes.

The Bangerz Tour has become known for Miley’s covers. We were treated to an extra psychedelic version of The Beatles’ Lucy In The Sky with Diamonds, her godmother Dolly Parton’s Jolene, Led Zeppelin's Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You and Johnny Cash’s Boy Named Sue. The girl loves to nod to her southern roots!

It’s not all singing and crotch grabbing. Miley’s message “to be whoever the f*ck you want and ignore the haters” is an important one. She empowers her fans to be ambitious. And what about those parents gasping in horror at Miley’s twerk fest? How is her ‘art’ any different to when Madonna simulated an orgasm while performing Like a Virgin on stage during her Blonde Ambition Tour circa 1990? Or even Elvis swinging his hips in the 50s? It’s not.

This is pop at its best – but the question is, will she maintain this current status, or is Bangerz destined to be fodder for Tuesday night karaoke at your local RSL club? Time will tell.

When Miley rode her floating wiener off the stage, shouting her words of wisdom, the best was yet to come. She quickly returned for an encore of hits including We Can’t Stop and Wrecking Ball. She caused some confusion by vanishing once more before taking the stage for a second encore. We could only hope - was she going to treat us to a round of Party in the USA? She sure did. The whole gang rose from beneath the stage for the last hurrah.

The whole ordeal was certainly a party. And it was a great one.
