Exclusive: Nicole Kidman responds to Oscars buzz
Nicole Kidman’s role in Boy Erased has generated plenty of Oscars buzz for the Australian actress, but the 51-year-old is as modest as ever about a potential Academy award.
“I have no idea,” the movie star told Yahoo Lifestyle at the 2018 AACTA Awards in Sydney when she was asked if she could land a nomination.
Instead Nicole turned attention to her appearance at Wednesday night’s prestigious Australian film and television awards, which celebrates home-grown talent.
“Thee main thing is it’s lovely when you get something like this, to be here because these films need the support,” she said. “They’re smaller films and they need it.”
Nicole portrays the character Nancy in Joel Edgerton’s film Boy Erased, which also stars Joel himself, as well as Russell Crowe, Lucas Hedges and Troye Sivan.
Based on a true story, the film sees a Baptist family dealing with their son coming out.
His father, a preacher played by Russell Crowe, does not approve of his son’s (Lucas) sexuality and sends him away to Christian gray conversion therapy.
Nicole plays Russell’s onscreen wife Nancy, while Joel portrays the the chief therapist at the conversion facility.
After attending the ARIA Awards with husband Keith Urban last week, Nicole walked solo at the AACTA Awards at The Star on Wednesday in a glimmering pink gown.
Later in the night she won the Best Actress award at the AACTAs, and said the nod was very special because it was for Boy Erased.
“It’s such an important story,” she said in the media room after her victory.
