Perry (right) was best known for playing Dylan McKay, originally the boyfriend of Shannen Doherty’s central character, Brenda Walsh, in the phenomenally popular ’90s teen show — in one of his very first roles. As McKay, he played a James Dean-type loner with a troubled family life and won the hearts of teenage girls everywhere. In 1992, People magazine noted that he once climbed into a laundry hamper to escape 4,000 screaming fans. Luke Perry, who died at 52 after suffering a stroke, is best known for his work on teen soap Beverly Hills, 90210, but the actor played many more notable roles in his more than three-decades-long career.

Here’s a look back at his many parts, from a teen surfer romancing a Beverly Hills transplant, to an imprisoned televangelist preacher, to the father of comic book character Archie Andrews.
