Erik ten Hag admitted Casemiro deserved a red card in the win over Crystal Palace, though still criticised the officiating in Manchester United’s recent matches.

His side made it 13 wins in a row at Old Trafford across all competitions as they beat Palace 2-1, though it was a victory that turned out to be far more nervy than initially looked likely.

Goals from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford, the Englishman’s 11th since the World Cup, put United in complete control, but a straight red to Casemiro led to a tense final 20 minutes.

Jeffrey Schlupp halved the deficit but no equaliser followed, as Casemiro’s rush of blood, the Brazilian sent off for grabbing Will Hughes by the neck after a VAR review, proved not to be costly.

Casemiro will now miss United’s next three matches through suspension, returning for the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle at the end of the month.

Speaking after the match, Ten Hag once again brought up Andy Carroll’s challenge on Christian Eriksen in the FA Cup, one that has left the midfielder out for three months, as he called for more consistency.

“Casemiro crossed the line, you saw that,” the United boss said.

“However, I’m unhappy with the inconsistent refereeing. Not only this game but also [in the away match against] Palace. They elbowed Martinez, and then last week with Eriksen.

“A lot of other players crossed the line, including some Crystal Palace players. VAR didn’t intervene with them.”
