England 5-1 Netherlands LIVE! Euro 2022 warm-up result, match stream and latest updates today

England vs Netherlands - LIVE!

A dominant second half display from hosts England secured a thumping 5-1 victory over the Netherlands in a Women’s Euro 2022 warm-up match at Elland Road.

England coach Sarina Wiegman led the Dutch to the European title in 2017 and watched as her former side took the lead through prolific midfielder Lieke Martens.

Lucy Bronze, soon to be a teammate of Martens at Barcelona, equalised for the home team to leave the score 1-1 at halftime, before further goals from Beth Mead (two), Ella Toone and Lauren Hemp provided an emphatic win.

It might have been different had Dutch midfielder Sherida Spitse, winning her 200th cap, not missed a penalty when she struck the post with the scores level. England went up the other end of the pitch and Mead gave them the lead 54 seconds later.

Wiegman’s side are next in action on Thursday when they travel to Zurich to play Switzerland in their final warm-up game before this summer’s Euros.

Match report

22:18 , Matt Verri

England Women put down a serious marker for this summer’s European Championship on home soil as they swept aside defending champions Netherlands 5-1 at Elland Road.

It was the visitors who took the lead, through Lieke Martens, but Lucy Bronze got the Lionesses level with a cross that flew perfectly into the back of the net.

Sherida Spitse missed a penalty after the break for the Netherlands and that proved the turning point, as Beth Mead, Ella Toone and Lauren Hemp all then found the back of the net as England ran riot, with Mead getting her second of the night in the closing stages.

Up against her home nation, who she led to glory at Euro 2017, Sarina Wiegman saw her adopted country turn on the style and ensure she has still not tasted defeat since taking charge of the Lionesses.

There is just one more warm-up match to go for England, against Switzerland next week, before the serious business begins against Austria on July 6 at Old Trafford.

It’s.... coming home?

21:59 , Matt Verri

FT: England 5-1 Netherlands

21:55 , Matt Verri

Well that’s a serious marker put down!

England run riot late on at Elland Road to blow away the Netherlands and win 5-1.

Mead (x2), Toone and Hemp all on target after the break - special performance.

21:53 , Matt Verri

90+4 mins: Russo played through in the box, hammers an effort over the box!

Massive chance to make it 6-1. We can forgive England one missed chance though...

GOAL! England 5-1 Netherlands | Beth Mead 90'

21:50 , Matt Verri

IT’S FIVE!

Netherlands defence is nowhere to be seen. England should score at the first attempt, they don’t but it’s only cleared out to Mead who from 12 yards out takes her time before firing low into the bottom corner.

21:47 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Free-kick England, which Mead will take. Once she’s taken in some applause from the crowd that is.

Whipped in with plenty of pace towards Bright, well defended by the Netherlands.

21:44 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Not a huge amount of pace in the match now - both sets of players know this is long gone as a contest.

England can enjoy these final minutes in front of a delighted Elland Road.

21:40 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Another change for England. Hemp off - another sensational display.

Parris on for the final ten minutes. Lionesses have some serious strength in depth, particularly in forward areas.

21:36 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Netherlands look a bit stunned after that couple of minutes, as you’d expected. Sitting off and happy to let England have the ball.

Wiegman’s unbeaten record is going to be extended and in serious style.

GOAL! England 4-1 Netherlands | Lauren Hemp 74'

21:34 , Matt Verri

ENGLAND RUNNING RIOT!

What a statement this is. Toone is so unlucky, volley from the edge of the box bounces back off the post after a lovely move.

Scooped out to Hemp who from just inside the box sends a stunning volley of her own into the top corner. Sensational finish.

GOAL! England 3-1 Netherlands | Ella Toone 72'

21:32 , Matt Verri

ENGLAND EXTEND THE LEAD!

Another substitute scores for the hosts. Cuts inside, curls it towards the far corner... it’s awful goalkeeping from Van Veenednaal who completely misjudges the flight of the ball.

21:30 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Russo cuts inside, tries to find the far corner as she loses her footing. Wins a corner instead.

Played short and ten seconds later Hemp is passing it all the way back to Earps. That was certainly not the plan.

21:27 , Matt Verri

68 mins: SO CLOSE!

Nearly 3-1. Hemp with yet another perfect cross, Mead there at the back post but this time the effort is straight at the goalkeeper.

Either side and that was Mead’s second.

21:26 , Matt Verri

66 mins: So much space out there now, both sides will fancy their chances in the latter stages.

Daly charges into acres of open gras, can’t resist trying her luck from miles out in front of her home fans. And she finds the home fans too as her shot flies high and wide.

21:22 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Speaking of!

Miedema is on for the visitors, big reception. Pelova and Beerensteyn off, as Brugts also comes on.

Three changes from England. Greenwood, England and Kirby off, Russo, Toone and Stanway the three coming on.

21:18 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Kirby drives into the box, takes an age before eventually passing... chance has gone. Shot had to come away quicker, or at all, from Kirby.

Miedema to come on soon for the Netherlands?

21:15 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Response needed from the Netherlands now, after that disastrous minute.

Spitse has a corner to take. Good delivery in once more, Earps comes but doesn’t get anywhere near it. Luckily her defenders get the job done.

Comes back in, England shanks it behind for another corner. Taken short, drilled in low and Earps claims.

GOAL! England 2-1 Netherlands | Beth Mead 53'

21:13 , Matt Verri

INCREDIBLE!

England have taken the lead seconds later! Hemp roars past the defender and puts a wonderful cross into the six-yard box, where Mead bundles it home from close range.

SPITSE MISSES PENALTY!

21:11 , Matt Verri

On her 200th international appearance, Spitse steps up.

Earps guesses correctly - doesn’t matter though, Spitse’s penalty flicks off the outside of the post and it’s wide.

PENALTY NETHERLANDS!

21:10 , Matt Verri

50 mins: VAR tells the referee to go and have a look at the pitchside monitor.

Has to be a penalty - AND IS! No complaints from Greenwood, who is shown a yellow card.

21:08 , Matt Verri

49 mins: Netherlands have a huge shout for a penalty... waved away!

Pass in behind and Van de Donk is clean through, until Greenwood comes sliding in and takes her out in the box. Didn’t get any of the ball - VAR will surely overturn this.

21:05 , Matt Verri

46 mins: Nearly a perfect start to the half from England.

So positive from Hemp, drives straight at the defence and into the box. Curls a shot towards the far corner, blocked and falls for Mead but she can’t control it and the ball rolls out of play.

Back underway!

21:04 , Matt Verri

We’re off and running again at Elland Road.

Kelly is off at the bench, Mead brought on by England. Former Arsenal star Van de Donk is also introduced at the break.

21:02 , Matt Verri

Players will be back out any second now.

Strong options for both sides on the bench - Miedema will surely come on for the Netherlands at some point.

Did not mean that...

20:57 , Matt Verri

How the visitors took the lead

20:53 , Matt Verri

HT: England 1-1 Netherlands

20:49 , Matt Verri

And that’s half-time at Elland Road.

Entertaining first 45 minutes - even on the whole too. Martens put the visitors in front, before Bronze clipped a cross straight into the far corner.

Lionesses have had slightly more possession, but Netherlands have looked dangerous going forward.

 (PA)
(PA)

20:46 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Two minutes added on at the end of the half.

England again brave deep in their own half, Kelly holds the ball up well and draws the foul.

20:44 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Williamson has been one of England’s best players, breaking up play in midfield and picking a number of nice passes.

Bright plays it forward with pace to Kirby, she can’t quite bring it under control though and the Netherlands can clear.

20:42 , Matt Verri

41 mins: Netherlands seeing more of the ball now - last 20 minutes or so have been very even.

Good test for England ahead of the Euros. Probably the toughest test they’ve faced since Wiegman took charge.

20:39 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Another break in play for an injury stoppage, allows Wiegman to call Bronze over for some instructions.

Potentially telling her to keep crossing them straight into the top corner.

20:36 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Great response from the Dutch, starting by Spitse and they swiftly counter.

Ball played low into the box, Beerensteyn tries to flick it on but she has to settle for a corner instead.

Again it’s a dangerous ball in, Daly there to hammer it away as it drops.

GOAL! England 1-1 Netherlands | Lucy Bronze 32'

20:33 , Matt Verri

ENGLAND GET THEMSELVES LEVEL!

No way Bronze meant that but who cares!

Ball breaks free and Kirby can drive forward. Pass to Kelly is behind her, Bronze is running onto it though and from the side of the box she looks to stand a cross up to the back post.

It’s lifted perfectly beyond the goalkeeper and into the far corner!

20:32 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Kelly growing into the match, seeing more and more of the ball out wide on the right. Another corner for the Lionesses.

Not particularly convincing from Wilms, who lets it bounce in the box, but she just about does the job.

20:30 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Lovely lay-off from Williamson, Kirby can drive at the defence and Nouwen slides in to bring her down right on the edge of the box. Yellow card and a brilliant position for England.

Greenwood goes low and to the goalkeeper’s side. Not enough pace on it, comfortable save.

20:28 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Kelly wins the ball back and can break away down the right for England. Cuts back inside nicely, lays the ball off to Williamson. She finds Kirby in the box, space is closed down though and the hosts have to come back.

It got the fans up again though, who are in fine voice as Kelly now wins a corner for the Lionesses.

20:24 , Matt Verri

24 mins: England on the ropes here, really open at the back all of a sudden.

Beerensteyn threatens to run clean through, Daly has to show good pace to get back and knocked it behind for a corner.

Spitse with another superb set-piece delivery, somehow misses everyone and rolls out for a goal-kick. England lucky.

GOAL! England 0-1 Netherlands | Lieke Martens 22'

20:23 , Matt Verri

VISITORS LEAD!

Brilliant delivery from Spitse, Martens gets across the defender and flicks the header into the far corner. Wonderful finish.

All came from England playing their way into problems.

20:21 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Earps down receiving treatment, got flattened as a cross came in. She’ll be fine to continue.

England nearly get themselves into huge trouble, Bright dribbling out in her own box and then plays a terrible pass. Netherlands win a corner.

20:19 , Matt Verri

18 mins: SUPERB SAVE!

Netherlands very nearly take the lead. Roord’s shot from the edge of the box falls for Beerensteyn, she bundles Bronze out the way and is denied by Earps from close range. Brilliant from the goalkeeper.

20:15 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Hemp very nearly puts England in front in bizarre circumstances!

Ball played back to Van Veenendaal, the goalkeeper is very calm but her pass is charged down by Hemp. Just rolls wide of the empty net.

20:13 , Matt Verri

12 mins: Almost!

Clever set-piece, England flicks it on but it won’t quite fall for an orange shirt in the box. Continues to be the home side dominating play.

Saying that, Williamson gives it away in a really poor position. Ball crossed in, Roord knocks it down and Beerensteyn goes down in the box - nothing giveen. VAR not interested either.

20:11 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Daly cuts inside, goes down as Roord sticks her leg out and gets the decision.

Replays suggest there was no contact, and that’s putting it generously. Benefits of being a Leeds fan playing at Elland Road, perhaps...

20:08 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Van der Gragt clatters into Hemp and that will be a free-kick for the hosts. Chance to bring the defenders up.

Decent delivery into the box, slightly too much height and that allows Van Veenendaal to come off her line to claim.

England will be happy with their start so far, settled very confidently.

20:06 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Lionesses seeing pretty much all of the ball in the early stages.

Daly goes for a long pass over the top, trying to find England straight down the middle. Too much on it though and it runs comfortably through to the goalkeeper.

20:02 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Brave start from England, playing out from the back in their own box in the opening minute.

They work it nicely up the pitch, Kirby twice drifts out wide to the right and finds space. The second occasion sees a lovely cross clipped into the back post, Hemp can’t direct the header.

KICK-OFF!

20:00 , Matt Verri

We are underway!

England in orange, Netherlands in white. Just to make it difficult for everyone.

19:58 , Matt Verri

Sweet Caroline - done. National anthems - done.

Nothing else on the set list now, time to get underway. Wiegman presented with some flowers by her former players ahead of kick-off.

19:53 , Matt Verri

Sweet Caroline ringing out around Elland Road. No sporting event is allowed to take place without that being played, as we know.

Once Neil Diamond is done, kick-off will be just a few minutes away!

19:47 , Matt Verri

Netherlands boss Mark Parsons is hopeful his side will peak at the right time this summer.

The Englishman took charge a year ago and while he admits the defending champions are not at their peak, he wants them to grow into the Euros.

“The England game is going to be key because you don’t really know where you are until you play top teams,” Parsons said.

“We will not be ready at the beginning of this tournament to win it. But the idea is we don’t have to be ready to win it at the beginning, we just have to be good enough to beat Sweden and Portugal and Switzerland.

“Now is that possible? Absolutely. We need to be ready by the last game. We have got to get there and we are going to need to grow through the tournament, need to win games we should win and win games maybe we shouldn’t, and that is what top teams do.”

What’s to come this summer

19:39 , Matt Verri

England are in Group A at Euro 2022, which gets underway in just a couple of weeks. They’ll face Austria, Northern Ireland and Norway.

For the defending champions Netherlands, it’s Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland in Group C.

Both are fancied to get through their groups and make a deep run in the tournament.

Visitors were out earlier looking at the pitch...

Hosts have arrived!

19:08 , Matt Verri

So England gets her chance for.... England, in the absence of White. Daly starts at left-back, while it looks like Kirby at number ten for the hosts.

For the Netherlands, Van de Donk and Miedema are both on the bench, while another player with an Arsenal connection, Roord, starts.

England will be doing their best impression of the Netherlands tonight, wearing their away kit.

That means the visitors will also be in their changed strip.

18:16 , Matt Verri

Not long to go until the serious business gets underway this summer!

England have tonight’s match and then one more warm-up on June 30, against Switzerland.

Then it’s full focus onto Euro 20222, which the Lionesses get underway when they face Austria on July 6 at Old Trafford.

Prediction

18:08 , Matt Verri

This is a real step up for the Lionesses and will be a useful indicator of where they are as a team heading into this summer’s Euros.

Wiegman, who has won every match since taking charge of England, will know better than almost anyone the threats that the visitors possess and the Lionesses will be blunted themselves by the absence of White.

It looks set to be a high-quality encounter, with potentially nothing to separate the two sides.

Draw, 1-1.

Netherlands team news

17:58 , Matt Verri

For the visitors, former Arsenal star Danielle van de Donk will be keen to get the chance to prove her fitness. The Lyon midfielder missed seven months of the season with a foot tendon injury, only making her return off the bench in her club’s final match of the campaign.

Elsewhere, Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema has 92 goals in 108 appearances for her country and will provide a real test for the Lionesses defence should she start as expected.

England team news

17:44 , Matt Verri

England will be without Ellen White, after the striker tested positive for Covid and had to leave the camp. It’s uncertain whether she will test negative and recover in time to play a part in the final warm-up match on June 30.

Jess Carter is believed to be fully fit after her injury worries, meaning Wiegman has the other 22 players named in her Euros squad available and in contention to face the Netherlands.
