Will There Be an “It Ends With Us ”Movie“ ”Sequel? What We Know So Far
After ‘It Ends With Us’ premiered on Aug. 9, 2024, fans were left wondering if Lily Bloom’s story will continue on-screen as it does in the book, ‘It Starts With Us’
Warning: Spoilers ahead!
Fans came out in droves to see Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni’s It Ends With Us when it premiered in August 2024. But many were left wondering — will there be a sequel?
It Ends With Us is based on Colleen Hoover's 2016 novel of the same name. The story revolves around Lily Bloom (Lively) and Ryle Kincaid (Baldoni) as they start a relationship. However, their partnership starts to go downhill as Ryle becomes abusive to Lily. Enter Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), who Lily knew in high school and reminds her of what love can be.
Six years after the novel came out, Hoover released a sequel, It Starts With Us, which picks up where the first leaves off, following along Lily and Atlas’ relationship. The It Ends With Us movie ends more ambiguously than the epilogue in the book — in which Atlas and Lily fully reunite — leaving fans yearning for more.

However, as of August 2024, no sequel has been announced, with director and star Baldoni telling TV Insider that he hasn’t thought that far yet.
“I haven’t. I have no idea what that story would be,” Baldoni said. “I’m somebody who’s just doing my best to stay in the present and stay in the here and in the now and not think too far ahead.”
He added, “I’m just kind of doing my best to take this all in because it’s been five years to even get us here. So I can’t even fathom another story yet.”
While Baldoni may not be attached yet, here’s everything to know about whether there may be an It Ends With Us sequel in the future.
How did It Ends With Us end?
It Ends With Us leaves off with a bit more ambiguity than it does in the book. In the novel’s epilogue, Lily runs into Atlas one day with her daughter while she’s on her way to meet Ryle. After dropping her daughter off, Lily comes back to find Atlas and tells him her daughter’s middle name is “Dory,” in honor of their shared favorite character from Finding Nemo.
She tells Atlas she’s ready to be loved and the book ends with him kissing her tattoo and telling her, “You can stop swimming now, Lily. We finally reached the shore."
While the movie also sees Lily leave Ryle, she doesn’t reunite with Atlas as explicitly. The film ends on a cliffhanger as they both reveal to each other that they are currently single and begin to draw near before the film cuts to black.
What is It Starts With Us about?
It Starts With Us picks up right after Lily’s run-in with Atlas and finds her questioning whether she should be with him. She ultimately decides to be and the majority of the novel focuses on their relationship. However, her relationship with Ryle continues to be a factor as she works on co-parenting with him.
Some characters from the original book also appear again including Ryle’s sister Allysa (Jenny Slate) and her husband Marshall (Hasan Minhaj), who are ever-faithful friends to Lily. New characters, such as Atlas’ estranged mom, Sutton, make an appearance, revealing he has a younger brother, Josh.
What has Justin Baldoni said about a sequel?
While he was promoting It Ends With Us, the first question on everyone’s mind was whether Baldoni would return to helm It Starts With Us. However, at the movie’s premiere in August 2024, Baldoni remained coy about whether he would take that role again.
"I think that there are better people for that one," he told Entertainment Tonight. “I think Blake Lively's ready to direct, that's what I think."
His comments came after rumored drama between the cast after fans noticed that the main cast doesn’t follow Baldoni on Instagram — even though they all follow each other — and he didn’t join the cast in introducing the movie on stage at the film's New York City premiere.
What has Colleen Hoover said about a sequel?
Hoover has also been coy about a sequel, sharing that she was so focused on promoting this movie she hadn’t thought so far in the future — however, would be open to adapting her novel to the screen again.
After being asked in an August 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight whether a sequel was coming to the screen, Hoover jokingly turned to Sklenar and asked him whether he has any “breaks” in his schedule, to which he responded he would “love to do it.”
“I’m gonna be honest that ending scene just leaves you kind of wanting more Lily and Atlas for sure,” she said.
Hoover previously said she wrote the sequel so many years after the first book’s success — and while the movie adaptation was already in production — because fans asked her for more Lily and Atlas content.
"After It Ends With Us gained momentum on TikTok, I was inundated with requests for more Lily and Atlas,” she wrote in the introduction to It Starts With Us. “And how could I possibly deny a community that has changed my life? This novel was written as a thank-you for the tremendous support, and because of that, I wanted to deliver a much lighter experience. Lily and Atlas deserve it."
Who would return for the sequel?
Though no cast has been confirmed so far, it would make sense for Lively and Sklenar to reprise their roles as the main plot follows their story. Baldoni could also reprise Ryle, as he also comes into play in the sequel.
Slate and Minhaj could also be asked to return as they continue to be supporting characters in the sequel.
For now, Lively and Sklenar have busy schedules lined up. Lively is currently working on the A Simple Favor sequel, while Sklenar is tied to a project, Drop, alongside Meghann Fahy.
