Emotional Terri Irwin reveals son Robert struggled with Steve's death
Terri Irwin has broken down in a teary interview about the devastating affect losing her husband, Crocodile Hunter star Steve Irwin, had on their two kids.
The 53-year-old told Anh Do how ‘hard’ it was to break the awful news to the then eight-year-old Bindi and two-year-old Robert in 2006.
Terri reveals in an upcoming episode of Anh’s Brush With Fame, that Rob was so badly affected, he’d often sit in the bath and sob.
“I think Bindi grasped it, she understood…” she says. “But it was harder with Robert. He just wasn’t connecting.”
But when Anh probes a little deeper into how the toddler reacted, Terri makes a heartbreaking confession.
“He would sit in the bathtub and cry, ‘I just want my dad,'” she says, holding back her own emotion.
Steve died aged 44, when a stingray punctured his heart whilst filming his hit TV show off the Coast of Queensland.
As the world went into mourning, Terri describes having to take great lengths to keep the kids out of the spotlight.
“I’ve literally got them rolled up in blankets on the back seats of vehicles to keep them from being photographed at their most vulnerable,” she recalls, tearfully.
However, the mum-of-two also discusses her most cherished memories from their 14-year-marriage, including how Steve proposed to her after a sweaty afternoon of working at the zoo.
While Terri, who was 27 at the time, says she could think of a “million reasons why” the pair shouldn’t tie the knot after just eight months of dating, she revealed something inside of her just said ‘yes’.
Rob, who is now 14, is the spitting image of his late dad and even attended the Logies this weekend with a snake — just like Steve did in 2003.
Anh’s Brush With Fame airs on Wednesdays on ABC and ABC iview from 18 July.
