Emily Blunt jabs “Barbie” at Oscars after “Oppenheimer” won Barbenheimer rivalry in awards race
Blunt hilariously observed that Barbenheimer "wasn't much of a rivalry" on the awards trail.
Emily Blunt just made the Barbie crew a little pink in the face by jokingly declaring Oppenheimer the true winner of the Barbenheimer showdown at the 2024 Oscars.
The upcoming Fall Guy costars took the stage at Sunday's ceremony to introduce a segment honoring Hollywood's stunt performers, and Blunt quipped about the pair's playful, action-packed rivalry between their respective blockbusters that unfolded at both the summer box office and across the current awards race.
"I'm just happy that we can finally put this Barbenheimer rivalry behind us," Gosling, a Best Supporting Actor nominee for his role as Ken in Barbie, told Blunt, who competed for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of the titular Oppenheimer character's wife.
"That's right, here's Ken and Kitty, just leaving all that fodder in the dust, guys, right?" Blunt replied. "And the way this awards season has turned out, wasn't much of a rivalry, so, just let it go!"
Gosling then quipped back, noting that, while Oppenheimer — which has won virtually every Best Picture precursor so far, from the Golden Globes to the SAG Awards — did "very well" in the run-up to the Oscars, there's a reason "they call it Barbenheimer and not Oppenbarbie."
"I think you guys are at the tail end of that because you were riding Barbie's coattails all summer," he said, to which Blunt responded, "Thanks for Ken-splaining that to me., Mr. 'I need to paint my abs on to get nominated.' You don't see Robert Downey Jr. doing that."
The stars' banter came on the final night of the Barbie vs. Oppenheimer battle, which began last summer as both high-profile films battled for the No. 1 position at the box office over the July 21, 2023 weekend.
Though the Greta Gerwig-directed Barbie ultimately became the top-grossing global hit of the year with nearly $1.5 billion in worldwide ticket sales (versus Oppenheimer's $961 million haul), Christopher Nolan's historical drama has swept most major awards shows leading up to the Academy Awards, including at the BAFTA Awards, the Directors Guild of America Awards, the Producers Guild of America Awards, and the aforementioned Golden Globes and SAG Awards.
