Elle Fanning Channeled Goldie Hawn With Red Carpet Pigtails and Gucci Hair Accessories
You have to see it to believe it.
From classic slingbacks to archival John Galliano dresses, Elle Fanning loves to throw it back. At last night’s premiere of the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, the actress channeled the film's retro setting with a mod-style white Gucci column gown and a kitschy hairstyle to match. The 26-year-old star wore a set of backcombed pigtails that made her look like a young Goldie Hawn, who often rocked similar short-and-sweet plaits in the ‘60s.
Crafted by hairstylist Jenda Alcorn, Fanning’s pigtails are a playful take on the beehive hairstyle, popularized by style icons like Goldie Hawn, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and, of course, Brigitte Bardot, who was Alcorn’s original inspiration for the look in tandem with the 1959 film Gidget starring Sandra Dee. Traditionally, the '60s style features hair piled high, teased for extra volume, and smoothed into a rounded shape. Like Hawn, Bardot embraced the pigtail during the decade, taking the youthful style into effortlessly cool territory with tactful mussing and pulled-out wisps.
To achieve the look, Alcorn started by prepping Fanning’s hair with L’Oréal EverPure shampoo and conditioner. She then applied EverPure Sulfate-Free 21-in-1 Color Caring Spray to detangle and protect the hair from heat. Next, she sprayed EverPure Dry Shampoo at the roots to add volume and body. After teasing the hair at the crown, Alcorn secured the pigtails and added Gucci accessories: crystal hair ties and a twinkling bow barrette fastened in the back. Finally, she finished the style by misting Elnett Hairspray to set everything in place.
In A Complete Unknown, Fanning plays Sylvia, a character loosely based on Suze Rotolo, Dylan’s muse and girlfriend, and the role was definitely top of mind when Alcorn and makeup artist Erin Ayanian Monroe, who gave Fanning graphic cat eyes and dusty rose lips and cheeks, created her look.
“I love working with Elle because she’s fearless when it comes to capturing a look that nods to the film of the press tour while keeping things innovative and fresh,” Alcorn tells InStyle. “Elle has very specific personal style and is always brimming with ideas as soon as she’s chosen the dress. She had the foresight to request extra trim from Gucci to create those gorgeous hair accessories.”
