Yahoo Lifestyle Dwyane Wade, Gabrielle Union announce T-shirt line to support LGBTQ kids
NBA veteran Dwyane Wade and actress wife Gabrielle Union have launched their own T-shirt line to benefit LGBTQ awareness education organization GLSEN, he announced on Instagram Saturday.
GLSEN works to “end discrimination, harassment, and bullying based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression and to prompt LGBT cultural inclusion and awareness in K-12 schools,” according to its website.
The shirts read “Please Remain Inclusive & Dedicated 2 Equality,” and 50% of proceeds from sales will go to GLSEN. The family will also donate an additional $50,000 to the cause.
In April, Wade showed support for his 12-year-old son Zion, who attended an LGBTQ pride parade in Miami with his siblings and stepmother Union, while Wade closed out the final season of his 17-year NBA career. Wade said he was surprised at the intense backlash he faced.
He posted a photo with the caption, “We support each other with Pride!” In another message, Wade said he wished he could have been there with Zion to “see [him] smile.”
In an interview with Variety, Wade said he felt it was important to show public support for Zion, and that he wanted things for his children to be different than they were for himself, growing up in inner-city Chicago. He added that he wants to be supportive of Zion and his interests the same way he helps his son Zaire, a basketball player, on the court.
“I don’t really talk about it much because it’s Zion’s story to tell. I think as a family, we should support each other. That’s our job. And my job as a father is to facilitate their lives and to support them and be behind them in whatever they want to do. My role is to support my kids and love my kids,” Wade said.
Wade, 37 and a 13-time All-Star, earned nearly $200 million in his career. He and Union married in 2014 but have been together for nearly a decade; they welcomed their first child together last year.
