Duchess of Cambridge sports glamorous side-swept hair at Royal Variety Performance

The Duchess of Cambridge switched up her hair style last night while attending the Royal Variety Performance with husband Prince William.

The 39-year-old royal swapped her usual bouncy blow dry for cascading curls, swept to one side.

Opting to recycle a glittering, emerald green floor-length gown, decorated with shimmering sequins across the bodice, waist and cuffs, the Duchess combined her outfit with green Emma London stilettos and a matching clutch.

The royal previously appeared in the sparkling, Jenny Packham dress during an official visit to Pakistan in 2019.

But while her re-worn outfit was undoubtedly beautiful, it was the Duchess's hair switch-up that everyone was focussed on.

Ricky Walters, owner and creative director of SALON64 told Yahoo UK why he believes the Duchess of Cambridge's hair reboot is a good look for her.

"Kate is slowly transitioning over from Royal to rock n roll with every blow-dry!" he says.

"Typically the Duchess has tends to opt for a traditional round brush blow-dry using just the hairdryer and a hairbrush, sometimes using rollers for added volume and lift.

"While this look is always very polished and groomed, it can, however, be a little ageing on someone so young, so it is nice to see Kate expressing herself with a Boho Wave."

To achieve the beachy vibe, Walters believes the Duchess of Cambridge used heating tools like a curling iron or giant waver.

"This look is super easy going and lived in," he continues. "Using a giant waver (looks a little like a traditional crimper), whether your hair is straight or wavy you can easily recreate this yourself.

"Taking the waver on smooth blown out hair, clam the wave on large sections of hair moving slowly down the hair to the ends of your hair," he advises.

"Leave to cool and rake through with a large wide tooth comb. If still a little too tight, blast with cold hair from a hairdryer and finish with hairspray.”

It isn't the first time the Duchess of Cambridge has switched up her hair look. Last year, the royal surprised fans by appearing in a virtual engagement with notably straighter hair.

The Duchess teamed up with the Duchess of Cornwall for a video appearance, which saw the pair host a joint video call with three of their respective children’s hospice patronages.

Dressed in an emerald green dress by Diane Von Furstenberg, the Duchess, was pictured sporting a relaxed straight blow-dry with a sweeping side parting on the call from her Anmer Hall home in Norfolk, where she was isolating with her family.

The Duchess is famous for her signature loose-curled, blow dries, but seemed to have opted to leave her long locks straight instead of rocking her trademark waves.

The mum-of-three also appeared to have chosen to part her hair slightly further to the side.

As well as her hairstyle, there are some suggestions the Duchess has previously experimented with her hair colour.

On a visit to Fakenham Garden Centre, last June, many royal fans noticed that the Duchess seemed to be sporting a lighter hair look as she made her first in-person engagement since the first coronavirus lockdown.

The royal seemed to be rocking lighter more coppery tones.

While many celebrities opted for more daring hair switch-ups during coronavirus pandemic, the Duchess of Cambridge seemed to take a typically subtle approach to her own hair refresh.

Following on from the subtle honey-blonde hue she sported at the beginning of last summer, the Duchess went on to reveal another discrete update, with a series of face-framing highlights lending a lighter, fresher twist to her collarbone-skimming lengths.

Known as 'halo highlights', according to Harpers Bazaar, the cleverly placed sections were designed to illuminate and flatter the face, as well as offering a style reboot without the ongoing upkeep of a full head of highlights.

We can't wait to see what look the Duchess opts for next.
