Dua Lipa Recalls Feeling 'So Upset' While Promoting 2018 Debut Album: 'Spread Myself Too Thin'
"The idea of not having time to do something properly makes me so nervous," said Lipa, reflecting on the grueling promotional schedule in a new interview
Dua Lipa has some "new rules" for herself when promoting her music.
In an interview with KISS FM UK, the pop star, 28, opened up about feeling "so upset all the time" during the grueling promotional schedule around her 2018 self-titled debut album, which spawned the hits "New Rules" and "IDGAF."
"There were so many moments, I think, when I first started when I was just in back-to-back-to-back, like, constant photo shoots, traveling and doing performances and not wanting to miss any opportunities — especially in America — when I was doing late-night TV or breakfast telly or whatever," Lipa told host Harriet Rose of the overwhelm of the beginning of her career.
"A lot of the time I would have to get up and perform — there was this one American show that I did, and I had 30 minutes before we started taping to just, like, try and figure out a routine and dance and perform and do the thing," continued the "Electricity" performer.
Lipa said she "would have completely changed" the way she approached that time in her life if she could.
"I never, ever wanted to go through that ever again. I’m going to make sure for everything I have the time to do it, and I don’t spread myself too thin, and I take care of myself differently," Lipa said of what she learned from the experience.
She added that many of her nerves stem from "the idea of not having enough time to do something properly."

The "Cold Heart" musician also opened up about her new single "Houdini" during the interview. "It's quite like dark, clubby, after hours with a lot of psychedelic influences," she said of the track. "That's my new thing."
Lipa added that "sonically" she feels like she's moving into "a completely different space."
"It feels like a new entry, just, for me. A refresh, a rebirth of some sort," she said of her new musical era.

Lipa released "Houdini" on Friday. In the lead up to the single's announcement, the “Don’t Start Now” singer wiped her Instagram and TikTok and changed her profile picture on Instagram to a new photo of herself and to a kaleidoscopic image on TikTok, X and streaming platforms.
The Grammy winner's most recent full-length album Future Nostalgia was released in 2020, which featured some of her biggest songs to date, including “Levitating" and “Break My Heart.”
Although it’s been three years since the pop star released an LP, she’s released several hit singles since then. Most recently, Lipa contributed “Dance the Night,” alongside producer Mark Ronson, to the Barbie soundtrack — and earned two Grammy nominations for the song.
