'Door knob' 80s wedding ring trolled as 'ugliest ever'

Family heirlooms are funny things. Often wildly expensive, they are snapshots of their eras that can either be a glorious reflection of a high-fashion time, or an awkward reminder of a time we’d all rather forget.

For one woman it was decidedly a case of the latter when she realised the ring she stood to inherit was her mum’s engagement ring that hails from the famously fashion-criminal years of the late 1980s.

Sharing the singular sparkler to a ring shaming group online, the woman explained the origin of the chunky item.

Yep.

"This is the ring my dad proposed to my mom with in the late 80s,” she captioned a snap of the ring.

"I don't know anything about it in terms of carat or clarity, but I like to call it 'The Sweater Destroyer'."

The photo shows an enormous band enveloping most of the woman’s finger, with the diamond elevated high above its golden base.

The internet unleashes their thoughts

Commentators online were quick to share their thoughts on the drastic design, and they didn’t hold back.

Some pointed out an uncanny resemblance.

“What drawer did your dad break that off?” they asked.

Others said it was so bad, it even stood out among the horrors of 80s jewellery.

“Oh wow. That’s bad even for the 80s,” one person wrote.

“He has committed a (fashion) war crime,” another agreed.

Others wondered if there was more going on than the woman had let on, even going so far as to question the relationship behind the monstrosity.

“Does your dad hate your mum?” one wondered.

"Ugliest ring I've ever seen here. U win," another agreed.

It’s not the first post to raise an eyebrow or several hundred, questionable rings have long fascinated online users.

Earlier this year, a bride was left fuming at the ‘minuscule’ ring her partner of eight years proposed to her with.
