Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has been a beloved television program since it debuted on ABC in 2004. When it went off the air in 2012, loyal viewers were sad to see it go. So when HGTV picked up the series for a 10th season in 2020, fans were ecstatic—but it only lasted for a single season. Fortunately for feel-good viewers everywhere, though, the nostalgic reality show is back and better than ever, this time with The Home Edit’s Joanna Teplin and Clea Shearer at the helm.
Now that the iconic home renovation series is back on our screens, though, many viewers are curious to know if the same budgetary issues have returned as well. After all, one of the major complaints surrounding Extreme Home Makeover in the past was the fact that homeowners had to front the funds—and often, in the end, couldn’t afford the property taxes associated with such elaborate additions. So, how does Extreme Makeover: Home Edition work—and who actually pays for it? Find out that and more, below.
Who Pays for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition?
In each episode, Joanna and Clea surprise a deserving family who’s down on their luck with the extreme home makeover of their dreams. The organization pros work with their dream design team, Wendell Holland and Arianne Bellizaire, along with builders from Taylor Morrison, and a bunch of volunteers to bring these renovations to life.
“The good news is that the EMHE team approached this reboot with a totally fresh perspective,” Joanna and Clea responded to a fan concerned with the quality and affordability of the projects. “Production teamed up with the talented folks at @taylormorrisonhomes to prioritize high standards, both structurally and aesthetically. Beyond that, everyone is focused on making these homes work for the families in the long term. The goal isn’t to create something flashy for TV but to provide a space that supports each family’s unique needs and is built to stand the test of time. We hope you’ll tune in to see these transformations in action.”
They don’t, however, foot the entire bill—but they do help!
“This reboot is very much informed by what has been learned from the past,” Joanna and Clea replied to another concerned viewer. “Production approached every episode with responsibility and care because we know how much impact the show can have on people’s lives. This isn’t just about fixing homes… It's about building futures! Families will be receiving financial support alongside a home that is intentionally designed to fit their lifestyle, needs, and budget for the long term. Again, thank you for giving us an opportunity to address these concerns.”
