Doctor Who Holiday Special Trailer Has Pumpkin Lattes, a Dinosaur and ‘Christmas Everywhere All at Once’
Christmas has come just a little bit early, with the release of the full trailer for Doctor Who‘s next holiday special.
In Joy to the World, as this year’s special is titled, Nicola Coughlan plays the titular Joy, “a determined woman whose life is forever changed when she meets the Doctor,” the Bridgerton star previously previewed.

“When Joy checks into a London hotel in 2024,” the official synopsis reads, “she opens a secret doorway to the Time Hotel — discovering danger, dinosaurs and the Doctor (played by Ncuti Gatwa). But a deadly plan is unfolding across the Earth, just in time for Christmas.”
The cast for Joy to the World, which was penned by former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat, also includes Steph de Whalley (Cyber Bride) as Anita, Jonathan Aris (Avenue 5) as Melnak, Joel Fry (Our Flag Means Death) as Trev, Peter Benedict (Dark) as Basil, Julia Watson (Casualty) as Hilda and Niamh Marie Smith as Sylvia.
Joy to the World will premiere Stateside on Disney+ Wednesday, Dec. 25, a little after noon ET.
The “new” Doctor Who’s first holiday special, titled The Church on Ruby Road and airing last Christmas, marked franchise front man Ncuti Gatwa’s first full outing as Fifteen. It also introduced Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday, a young woman who as a newborn was abandoned on a church doorstep on Christmas Eve 2004. “Season 1” proceeded to unravel the mystery of that strange night (and who/what all was witness to it), as well as eventually disclose companion Ruby’s parentage.
TVLine readers gave The Church on Ruby Road an average grade of “A-.”
As reported earlier by TVLine, the Doctor Who panel at this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con also announced casting for a new spinoff, The War Between the Land and the Sea, which brings back the Sea Devils and began filming in August.
