Yahoo Lifestyle Doc Rivers: Maybe NBA should send its COVID-19 game plan to White House
Doc Rivers is always good for a snappy quip and a laugh.
The Los Angeles Clippers coach couldn’t let a chuckle-worthy comment go while complimenting the NBA’s protocols to keep COVID-19 from getting into the bubble at Disney World in Orlando. The league reported on Monday its latest round of testing produced zero positive cases.
That’s huge for the league, which is scheduled to restart its season on July 30. And it’s surprising to all the naysayers who were judgmental of a bubble plan in a state that keeps experiencing spikes in its total number of cases. Florida had its second-largest recorded increase on Tuesday with 9,440 new cases that brings the total to 369,834. The state’s death toll is 5,206.
Rivers, who got in a jab at the NBA tip line last week, credited the results to the league’s testing protocols, mandatory mask requirement and constant symptom checks.
“Maybe we should send our game plan to the White House,” he said with a smile.
He may have said it, but plenty of people were thinking it.
The initial batch of tests inside the bubble resulted in two positives out of 322 players and they were both put into a strict quarantine outside of the complex. ESPN’s Malika Andrews said on “Get Up” that she had three doctors check in on her after reporting a headache, a sign that everything is being taken seriously.
The NWSL Challenge Cup tournament has also experienced zero positive COVID-19 tests once players got to the Utah site and matches were underway with teams staying in isolation.
Meanwhile, the United States as a whole continues to struggle in containing the virus. The country had 59,966 new positive cases on Monday, creating a 32 percent increase in cases over the past two weeks per the New York Times. There are more than 3.8 million total cases and 140,904 deaths as the number of new cases has been increasing since mid-June.
