Dexter: Original Sin Cast Tees Up Iconic Serial Killer’s ‘Coming of Rage’ Story — Watch
Ever wonder what led up to Dexter Morgan’s first kill? You’re about to find out.
In Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel set 15 years before the original series, Irish actor Patrick Gibson (The OA, Shadow and Bone) steps into the titular character’s shoes as he’s starting a post-grad internship at (where else?) Miami Metro PD. Not only do we get to watch a young Dex channel his bloodthirsty urges and inner darkness, but the future Bay Harbor Butcher’s first blood drives much of the action and drama in the show’s early episodes. The ’90s-set series also serves up vintage fashion and a killer soundtrack — no pun intended — and it all kicks off Friday, Dec. 13 on Paramount+. (Episodes will air on Paramount+ With Showtime Sunday nights at 10/9c.)
More from TVLine
Gibson scored the gig following a global casting search and preparation, from Dexter’s look to his voice, began almost immediately.
“From doing the audition, I was just watching Dexter nonstop all day,” Gibson tells TVLine in the video above, “and just finding the balance of bringing elements of what Michael did into it, and honoring the continuity between who he was as a young man and when we meet him in Season 1. We have his inner monologue played by Michael C. Hall, so there had to be continuity with the voice as well.”
Adds franchise veteran and Original Sin showrunner Clyde Phillips: “We had him into our studio and I sat with him for an hour. Loved his personality, loved his energy, loved his look, loved his talent… there was no second choice. Watch out for him. This guy’s a star, so get out of the way.”
In the video above, Gibson reveals more about his transformation into the legendary slasher, while co-stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, James Martinez and Alex Shimizu all weigh in. Plus, Phillips and Christian Slater break down the integral relationship between dad Harry and his special son.
