Demi Lovato calls out Instagram for promoting 'harmful' fat-shaming ad

Demi Lovato only recently made her return to Instagram after being in rehab.

But the singer is already fed up with it after scrolling through her feed to find a fat-shaming ad for a game app.

On Friday afternoon, the singer took to Twitter to call attention to her Instagram stories, where she said she “called out Instagram and some bulls*** game.”

The one in question is Game of Sultans — an interactive game where users can become Sultans, grow an empire and raise a family.

What was advertised on the social media platform, however, was a comparison of two of the players being categorised as “obese” and “pretty,” in addition to a screen presenting food options and each avatar’s level of control.

“This is absolutely harmful to anyone who is easily influenced by societal pressures put on us from the diet culture to constantly be losing weight in a world that teaches us to equate our value and worth with the way we look and especially anyone in recovery from an eating disorder,” Demi wrote, before telling Instagram to “keep this bulls*** off mine and other’s feeds.”

The social media app responded immediately by taking the ad down.

An Instagram spokesperson told Yahoo Lifestyle in a statement, “We’re sorry. This ad was approved by mistake. We reviewed it again and removed it from future delivery in people’s feeds.”

Representatives from Game of Sultans, however, have yet to respond.

Now Demi is being praised for reminding fans to “always speak up for what you believe in!” and using her voice to do just that.
