Yahoo Lifestyle Dave Martinez concerned about Marlins' coronavirus outbreak: 'I'm scared. I really am'
Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez is concerned about a coronavirus outbreak on the Miami Marlins. Martinez — who underwent a heart procedure in September — said he was “scared” upon finding out multiple players with the Marlins tested positive.
Martinez, 55, explained how he’s taking extra precautions to make sure he doesn’t contract coronavirus.

Martinez’s full comments read:
“I’m going to be honest with you, I’m scared. I really am. I go from here, home, back here every day, that’s all I do. I wash my hands, I went from 47 times a day to probably 99 times a day. Wear my mask everywhere I go. But there’s always that concern, you know.
“You don’t know, because of my heart condition, what happens to me if i do get it. I have to be extra careful. With that said, sometimes I tend to put myself aside and worry about other people more than me. I think that’s why I’m here, because I worry about those guys before I put myself first.”
Martinez added his level of concern rose from an 8 to a 12 after hearing about the Marlins’ positive tests. Four Marlins players tested positive for coronavirus Sunday. By Monday, that number jumped to 13 or 14 players. MLB postponed the team’s game against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday. The league also postponed the Philadelphia Phillies’ game against the New York Yankees. The Phillies played the Marlins on Sunday.
Nationals outfielder Juan Soto already tested positive for coronavirus
Martinez and the Nationals have already been affected by the virus. Prior to the team’s opening day game against the Yankees, outfielder Juan Soto tested positive for coronavirus. No other member of the Nationals has tested positive since Soto’s test. Martinez revealed Soto tested negative for coronavirus. He’ll need his next test to also come back negative before he’s allowed to return.
Nationals set to play Blue Jays on Monday
Despite the outbreak on the Marlins, MLB has no plans to cancel the 2020 season. Aside from those two postponed games, scheduled games will take place as expected. The Nationals are still set to play the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday.
Once the Blue Jays wrap up the series with the Nats, the Jays are expected to take on the Phillies. It’s unclear how the league plans to handle that series with the Phillies game postponed Monday.
