Watch Dan + Shay serenade “Voice” contestant and her fiancé during audition
Zoe Levert gets a spot on season 25 — and a chance to rehearse her first dance.
On night five of The Voice Blind Auditions, the teams are filling up quickly — in fact, the evening ends with just one spot left on each of the four teams — but just because coaches John Legend, Dan + Shay, Chance the Rapper, and Reba McEntire are busy perfectly curating their teams of 10 in an effort to win season 25, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a little time left for romance. And romance is exactly what we get when contestant Zoe Levert steps on the Voice stage for her audition.
The 20-year-old college student from New Orleans performs Taylor Swift’s “Better Man (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault)” and with some obvious pitch issues up front, things aren’t looking great for Zoe. At the very last second, however, after a much stronger second half of the ballad, John presses his button — Zoe will be joining Team Legend this season.
While she’s obviously beyond grateful to have John’s support, it’s Dan + Shay she really wants to address. She has some big news to tell them: She’s getting married soon, and her and her fiancé's first dance song is going to be Dan + Shay’s “From the Ground Up.” And guess what? Zoe’s fiancé Ryan is there watching over on the sidelines. The guys do not hesitate for one second: Both Dan and Shay get up out of their seats immediately, Dan grabs a guitar, and they ask Ryan to come out on stage. They proceed to serenade the couple who begin to slow dance — it’s a rehearsal dance, of sorts. Shay calls out to see if anyone is ordained and they could really make this a big moment. Alas, we’ll have to wait for another season for the first Voice wedding.
Soon, everyone is feeling some sort of way. “Now I’m gonna cry,” Chance says from his chair before he whips out his phone to film the whole thing. “Only on The Voice,” a giddy John adds. It’s all very sweet. After some congratulations from all of the coaches, and a joke from John that it’s clear if Dan + Shay had turned for Zoe, he would not be her coach, we get back to business. Chance tells Zoe that he’s actually really happy she has landed on Team Legend because to him, there’s “no better coach for vocal improvement and working on breath control” than John. John tells his new team member that her “higher range is so good” and that her “tone was so clear” — together they’ll just work on song choices that help her highlight those things.
It’s a big evening for Zoe, getting both a romantic wedding serenade and a shot at The Voice; still, I think we know which one she’s most excited about.
