A few years ago, while getting my hair done at a salon, I saw a girl reading Daisy Jones & The Six. My hairdresser told me she had just finished the book and recommended I pick up my own copy ASAP. It seemed like everywhere I went, I started to see people with the book in tow. That was 2019 — it was originally released in March of that year and was so popular that a TV series was put into the works by late July.

That’s how we got here today. You’re not alone if you’re slightly obsessed with Amazon Prime Video’s latest hit, Daisy Jones & The Six. However, if you have yet to read the book, you should probably get it while it’s on sale for $9.99 on Amazon. People always say that the book is better than the movie or TV show. In this case, they’re both great, but they do differ slightly (don’t worry, we won’t give away any spoilers here!).

This is the paperback version, but the hardcover is on sale, too.

First, What Is Daisy Jones & The Six?

Let’s back up for the newbies really quick. Daisy Jones & The Six is a fictional story by Taylor Jenkins Reid about a 1970s rock band — one of the most famous bands in the world — from the height of their fame and success to the reason behind their split. In an interview with her publisher, Penguin Books, Reid shared that she pulled creative inspiration from real-life rockstars, including Fleetwood Mac.

Here’s Why The Series Is Great

If you read the book before watching the series, you probably already had an idea of the characters in your head — what they looked and sounded like. However, if you wondered what Daisy Jones & The Six’s music sounded like, the show does it justice by providing an incredible soundtrack and emotional performances.

Hopefully, you’re pleased with the result on-screen because Reid herself was involved in making the series. You really get to see her full vision come to life, as well as the vision of showrunners Scott Neustadter and Will Graham and Sunshine Productions, Reese Witherspoon’s production company. Of course, like most on-screen adaptations, they had to make a few changes, and there are differences in how you see the characters interact.

“The story doesn’t necessarily flow in a completely linear way,” Graham said in an interview with ELLE. “I think the fun opportunity for us was to say, ‘Okay, well the book is what they said happened. We’re going to get a chance to show what actually happened.’ And of course that truth is a little messier.”

Here’s Why You Should Read The Book

Daisy Jones & The Six the book gives you the same story that the TV series is based upon, but it also reveals the inner thoughts and secrets of each character. It’s more intimate. The added details are engaging. And yes, while it’s fictional, reading the book, it all feels real. It pulls you in and takes you on a slightly emotional journey page by page.

“Amazon is releasing three episodes at a time and it’s going to take four weeks for everything to be released,” explained one Amazon reviewer. “I loved it so much that after six episodes I had to order the book to see how the story ends. I read it in two days. It’s completely amazing. One of the best books I’ve ever read.”

“OH MY GAWD. This book absolutely tore me in half,” wrote another reviewer. “It is so devastating and so beautifully written and I was so invested in the characters that I truly felt their pains. I felt their struggles, their joy, their celebrations, their convictions — all of it. Taylor Jenkins Reid, YOU ARE A MASTERFUL STORYTELLER!”

Seriously, just read it. Read it if you’ve already watched the series. However, if you have yet to watch it on TV, pick up the book first. Sure, everyone says that, but really do it. You won’t regret it.
