"Dad sandals" have a cool new lease of life.

"Dad sandals" have gone from an object of horror to a symbol of ultimate cool.

Gone are the days of towering heels and podiatrists are very happy about the shift.

"When dad sandals first emerged onto the scene last summer, preliminary reactions of horror and disgust were plentiful," says podiatrist Emily Smith, founder of Emily Braidwood, maker of science-backed insoles for any women's shoe.

"But the instant feeling of relief when you put on a pair of support sandals can’t be argued with.

"That these shoes have been fashion-ified has allowed people to experience the benefits of foot support and the difference it makes to everyday comfort and performance - without compromising on style."

Proenza Schouler + Birkenstock Milano patent leather sandals, $135 (reduced from $450)

This is the result of a collab between Proenza Schouler and the ultimate dad sandal - Birkenstock.

Birkenstock's much loved Milano sandals are reimagined in patent-leather.

If you're looking for designer dad sandals, these will serve you well.

The leather straps have touch fastenings and are set against a snake print insole.

They also have a ridged rubber sole to make them extra comfortable and an open toe.
