Joan stars the Emmy Award-nominated Game of Thrones alumna as real-life jewel thief Joan Hannington, in an “exhilarating yet emotional story set against the vibrant backdrop of the 1980s,” according to the network’s official synopsis.
Turner’s titular character is a fiery and uncompromising young mother who is deeply scarred and vulnerable, and finds herself trapped in a hellish marriage with a violent criminal named Gary. “When Gary goes on the run, Joan seizes the opportunity to create a new life for herself and her daughter, adopting new identities and making new acquaintances along the way — as a masterful jewel thief,” the logline continues.
The cast of Joan also includes Frank Dillane (Fear the Walking Dead), Kirsty J. Curtis (UK comedy Match Not Found), Gershwyn Eustache Jr. (Britannia) and Laura Aikman (The Rising). Joan was written by Anna Symon and directed by Richard Laxton.
Joan debuted Oct. 2 to 290,000 total viewers, dropping 27% of its lead-in from the Sullivan’s Crossing Season 2 premiere. The first episode earned an average TVLine reader grade of “A-,” with 89% of voters saying they’d be back for Episode 2. (Read premiere recap.)
