Cubs’ Alec Mills throws second no-hitter of 2020 MLB season

Chicago Cubs right-hander Alec Mills has thrown a no-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers, the second of the shortened MLB season.

The NL Central-leading Cubs throttled the Brewers 12-0, as Mills struck out five and walked three. Mills, 28, entered the day with a 4.74 ERA in 43 2/3 innings across eight starts. It’s his first year as a full-time starter in the Cubs rotation.

A 22nd round draft pick in 2012, he spent years in the Kansas City Royals system before debuting briefly in 2016. He came over to Chicago in a February 2017 trade for outfielder Donnie Dewees, and has now thrown the 16th no-no in Cubs history — the first since Jake Arrieta blanked the Cincinnati Reds in April 2016.

Mills’ five-strikeout no-hitter featured the fewest Ks since Henderson Alvarez’s in 2013. It accentuates an already dire Brewers offensive situation. They entered Sunday’s action with the 23rd-ranked offense in baseball by OPS.

The Cubs improved to 28-20, solidifying their lead in the division, while the Brewers dropped to 20-24 and fell further behind in the race for the wild card in the expanded postseason format.

Crosstown rival White Sox ace Lucas Giolito threw the season's first no-hitter in a dominant performance against the Pirates in August.
