'Criminal Minds' Fans, Matthew Gray Gubler Is Coming Back to CBS
In a twist of events Criminal Minds fans never saw coming, it looks like we may get a dose of Matthew Gray Gubler back on TV!
The actor has been long missed as Dr. Spencer Reid in the Criminal Minds: Evolution reboot since its 2022 premiere, leaving many to wonder if he'd ever find his way back to the small screen. Well, it looks like folks may have the chance to see Matthew on television once again, as Deadline announced on October 3 that he's working with CBS Studios to star in a project inspired by a man who made history in the world of science.
According to the outlet, the children's book author is set to star in a procedural crime dramedy that's currently called Einstein. But Matthew won't just be playing the titular role of Lew Einstein, the great grandson of theoretical physicist Albert Einstein. He's also on track to produce the pilot alongside Andy Breckman and Randy Zisk, who were also part of the team that worked on the series Monk.
When word about Matthew's shocking TV news began to circulate on Instagram, it didn't take long for fans to cheer in excitement.
"He's literally a genius in every universe," one person exclaimed in the comments. "HOLY MOLY WE'RE SO BACK!! 😍🙌," another declared. "I'M HERE FOR IT! 👏," a different follower added.
So, what will Einstein be about? Variety reports the show will follow Matthew's portrayal of Lew Einstein, who is a lackadaisical yet popular tenured professor at Princeton University. The site writes that while Lew is "irreverent and misguided, [his] genius and famous name weighs heavily on him but using his gift to help solve homicides may — finally — offer his life some direction and purpose."
Sounds intriguing, right? Well, we're totally here for it, since the last time we saw Matthew on TV in any capacity was when he starred in Doll Face season 2 back in 2021. And before that, his last appearance as Spencer Reid happened in the season 15 finale of Criminal Minds in 2020 — a.k.a. the final episode of the original CBS series.
While Matthew coming back to TV is certainly a surprise, it's actually something he's been teasing for a while. When he spoke to Good Housekeeping in September 2023, he seemingly implied his return to television was closer than we all thought.
"On the road, people are like, 'Oh, when are you going back to acting?'" he stated at the time. "It's so weird because I don't see a difference between the daily endeavor of acting from the daily endeavor of writing to the daily endeavor of drawing... I am sure I'll go back to comedy and to acting and all of that. I'm just not sure when, but I know I look forward to it."
Crossing our fingers that Einstein — and consequently, Matthew — will be on our screens very soon!
