Crazy beauty hacks we've learnt this year
We’re constantly being bombarded with beauty tips by celebrities on how to achieve their flawless look, but this year we’ve also seen an increase in crazy beauty hacks from bloggers and vloggers.
And it seems spending less really is more!
We’ve rounded up some of our favourite – and most outrageous – tricks from the last year.
Would you dare to try any?
Plastic forks to curl hair
If you want to try a different hairstyle coming into party season but don’t have the cash for expensive tools, beauty blogger Amrah has come to the rescue with her easy hair hack for loose curls.
There’s only piece of equipment you’ll need to buy – disposable forks.
In a video posted to her Instagram account, the New York-based blogger is seen combing through her hair and applying some styling mousse to the ends.
Then it’s simply a matter of portioning off a section of hair, twisting it up using the fork (starting at the ends and ending at the root), and finishing off with a quick blast from a hair dryer.
Cheetos to curl hair
If you don't want to use plastic forks, you can er, try curling your hair with Cheetos, like this woman did!
YouTuber Bunny Meyer, aka Grave3yardgirl, uploaded a video to her channel called “Curling my hair with Cheetos?” and that's exactly what happened.
She uses the cheesy, orange chips as curlers, wrapping strands of her hair around each one and letting them sit.
Shaving cream as make-up remover
Maria Yeager posted a video to her Instagram page showing her trying out the hack, which included nothing but her and a bottle of Gillette.
Lube as primer
YouTube star Huda Kattan has tried out a very different mixture of products, including lubricant, Vagisil and milk of magnesia, to see if they're any good as make-up primers.
And it turns out it felt "really soothing but not very hydrating" and thought it would be good for people with oily skin but when she applied her make-up over it, the lubricant turned flaky, making it almost look as if he skin was crumbling.
Avocado as conditioner
Victoria's Secret supermodel Adriana Lima shared the secret behind her long, shiny locks earlier this year - and it turns out she uses a pretty simple home remedy.
"In Brazil, we'd take our conditioner or hair mask and mix it with avocado and put that in our hair for a treatment," Adriana told Into The Gloss.
"It leaves your hair super shiny. I'm not joking!"
Coffee as fake tan
Blogger VelaBeauty has shared a clip to her Instagram of herself faking a tan with coffee granules...and it's kinda genius.
In the clip, she mixes a sachet of good old Nescafe instant coffee with moisturiser in a regular old kitchen mixing bowl. She then uses a makeup brush to blend the mixture, literally painting her body in the stuff.
Coffee as hair dye
Coffee can double as a natural alternative for dyeing your hair darker, and it’s actually easier to do than you’d think, says a DIY guide on Spoon University.
The hot drink trick helps tint your hair a darker shade, it has quite a few hair health benefits as well.
Studies have shown the caffeine in coffee can stimulate hair growth and even give hair a shinier appearance.
Chilli facial
Rochelle Wickramasuriya, from Sri Lanka, has uploaded a video to her Instagram page, which shows her rubbing a homemade concoction of cayenne pepper, chilli, milk, honey and cinnamon into her face in August.
Despite the fact that many may think your skin would burn by loading it with such ingredients, according to the young vlogger, the combination of chilli and cayenne pepper actually tightens pores, makes skin glow and reduces wrinkles.
Sock to apply foundation
Back in May, beauty vlogger Mayra of the YouTube channel MayraTouchOfGlam, uploaded a pretty interesting video showing her applying her foundation using a sock. Not only did the video rack up hundreds of thousands of views but it also made us a huge believer in using household items to apply your make-up. Just make sure your sock is clean, of course.
Sperm to get glowing skin
A beauty blogger from England has attributed her flawless, clear skin to daily sperm facials - which her male friend reportedly delivers every day in a pot.
Tracy Kiss said back in November that her rosacea has cleared up significantly since she started using the unusual ingredient, which she applies to her face from a Chinese takeaway container.
Yuk!
Mouthwash to get rid of dandruff
In April, Canada-based beauty vlogger, Farah Dhukai, tested to see whether Listerine could rid her hair of dandruff.
"All you need is ORIGINAL Listerine! Yes the mouthwash. In a spray bottle, fill it half with Listerine and half with water," she wrote on a clip posted to her Instagram.
"After you shampoo and condition your hair, spray the mixture onto your scalp only!
"Listerine has menthol, thymol, eucalyptol and methyl salicylate - all which make it an anti-fungal, anti-septic and and anti-inflammitory and is perfect for getting rid of dandruff."
