Courteney Cox Says Jennifer Aniston Stole So Many Clothes From 'Friends'
Courteney Cox is opening up about how diligent she is about purging her closet with things that don't bring her joy—and calling out Jennifer Aniston for being the polar opposite with her wardrobe. Having been in the spotlight for decades, Cox spoke about how she's seen trends come and go, noting that her daughter, Coco, is upset that Cox didn't hang on to some of her original pieces from the '90s, when she famously starred on Friends.
"My daughter, Coco, is so mad that I didn't save any of the ’90s clothes," Cox said during an appearance on Bella Freud's "Fashion Neurosis" podcast. Cox noted that her personal style didn't mesh with her character Monica Geller's penchant for cardigans and camis. "But I didn't love the '90s clothes. As a matter of fact, I could have kept anything on [Friends] that I wanted, and I didn't. And if I did, any of the clothes that I did have, like I said before, I just like to turn over. I don't want to keep the same things. I get bored and I don't like a lot of things. I don't have a big closet...If I don't wear it for a while, it's gone."
Cox also mentioned that her co-star kept just about anything and everything from the Friends wardrobe department—even things that weren't intended for her character, Rachel Green.
"Jennifer...she still has the same platforms. I don't mean the kind you're talking about," Cox shared when Freud asked about the '90s fashion the show has become known for. "I'm talking about the wedges, the ones with the rope around them. She would have taken those. She took a lot of Monica's dresses, and she'll say, 'Oh yeah, I used to wear this on Friends.' And I mean, it looks great on her. She has a great figure and she's adorable. But I'm like, 'Why would you take this floral little prairie dress from Friends?' But she holds on to everything."
Aniston admitted to swiping from Monica's closet in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
"I went into her line of clothes and I pulled it out, and I still have it and wear to this day," Aniston said. "It has tiny little flowers with a black lace V-neck and a little cap sleeve with a little slight ruffle of black lace."
Debra McGuire, the woman behind the clothes on Friends, told EW about the differences between Monica and Rachel on the show—and it came down to color more than anything else.
Rachel's "palette was primarily kind of greens and blues," McGuire shared, adding that she "kept [Monica] in this black-white-gray-burgundy world for a long time."
"It's interesting now how the attention is to Courteney's wardrobe as being iconic for the '90s...because there's more relevance to it now, in a way, than there was even then," McGuire added. "Part of her character was to be a little under the radar to look cool, but now it's become sort of the iconic '90s."
