Costco Customers Are Riled Up Over This Big Change At the Bakery
Part of Costco’s appeal is the brand's consistency in prices. Fan-favorite deals like the food court's hot dog and soda combo have been protected from rising prices for years. Some deals, howevrer, are still susceptible to change. One thing that is always for certain: fans of the popular bulk warehouse will always voice their opinions on the matter should one of their favorite items experience a sudden hike in price.
This week, Costco’s bakery found itself at the center of an online uproar, as the beloved baked goods section has made a pretty controversial change. In a post shared to Reddit, one member shared with viewers a discovery made at their local warehouse, in which a sign was displayed detailing a disappointing change in the brand's popular muffin selection.

The sign, which depicts the old muffin offering on the left and the new offering on the right, shows that the familiar mix and match option of any two 6-count muffin containers for $9.99 will no longer be available. Instead, the deal is being replaced with a smaller, 8-count offering for $6.99. While at first glance the deal seems to still offer each muffin at a price of around $0.874, but when you break it down by weight, the new 8-count offering ends up being even more expensive.

One helpful Redditor broke it down for readers like this:
“Old muffins were $4.995 per 35-ounce package,” which equates to $0.142714 per ounce. “New muffins are $6.99 per 31-ounce package,” which totals to $0.225484 per ounce. The result? “The new ones are 54-percent more expensive,” the Redditor concludes.
Along with the disappointing rise in price, customers who have sampled the new muffins are claiming that not only are they smaller than the old ones, they also do not taste as good. In response to the price hike, one commenter asked, “are they justified?”

“They’re not,” another commenter responded matter of factly. “Had them in Seattle a few months back. [I] was excited about the 8 pack because we cannot eat 12 before they go bad, but they are objectively worse muffins.”
Another chimed in to echo the disappointed sentiment, stating that the “old chocolate muffins were better” and “the new ones crumble apart really easily.”
While any price change is an unwelcome event unless it saves customers money, Costco members are going to just have to try the new muffins for themselves to see if their beloved baked treats are still worth the purchase. Customers can expect to find Blueberries and Cream, Triple Chocolate, Lemon Raspberry and Cinnamon Chip flavors available in the new 8-count packaging for a cool price of $6.99. For any newcomer to the Costco universe, this price can still seem like quite a deal.
