I tried the $25 teeth-whitening pen over 25,000 Amazon shoppers swear by, and it brightened my smile overnight

I’m a sucker for any fast-acting teeth-whitening products, especially when I have a friend’s wedding or a big vacation coming up. I always procrastinate and never think to whiten my teeth until it’s the week of or even the day before the event. That’s why I wanted to try the Colgate Optic White Overnight Teeth Whitening Pen. More than 25,000 Amazon shoppers give it a five-star rating and call it things like “quick and effective.”

Luckily, I’m happy to report that the reviews are true — it really did brighten my smile overnight. It’s not perfect, but it works, and it works fast. Here’s what plenty of other reviewers and I like about it — and a few things we don’t.

First of all, the whitening product is a gel that comes in a little pen with a brush head that makes it easy to paint onto your teeth. It’s mess-free, and there’s no taste at all. Simply paint it on, go to bed, and brush it off in the morning. It seemed gentle enough that I didn’t have any pain or sensitivity but strong enough that I noticed my teeth looked at least a shade whiter after seven to eight hours.

But the thing I didn’t love? The way it feels on my teeth. You have to completely dry your teeth before you apply this stuff to get it to stick, and when it does, it dries a little clumpy and feels like wax. Have you ever eaten a really sugary dessert and felt like your teeth were wearing sweaters? It’s kind of like that. Still, I don’t think it’s any more enjoyable to wear a whitening strip or keep an LED light in my mouth for over 10 minutes like other whitening solutions offer.

Additionally, the product description claims that, with proper application, there’s enough whitening product inside for 35 nightly sessions. Some reviewers, however, say that it lasted more like two weeks. I haven’t run out of mine yet after five sessions, so I can’t speak to this. But let’s just assume that a little goes a long way.

Needless to say, if you’re looking to whiten your teeth fast, easily and on the cheap, the Colgate Optic White Overnight Teeth Whitening Pen is a great option. If you’re a procrastinator like me, it’s a really great option. Right now, it’s on sale for $14.99 on Amazon, and at that price, I’m buying a backup one.
