Cirque du Soleil Announces New Underwater Show and You Can Only See It at One Resort
Step right up, boys and girls, because a brand new circus is coming to town! Cirque du Soleil, the international live entertainment sensation, has just announced its most ambitious project yet, and it's taking its audience underwater.
On Nov. 19, the revolutionary Canadian circus announced that it would be expanding its partnership with luxury resort brand VidantaWorld to launch a new one-of-a-kind show at the BON Luxury Theme Park in Nuevo Vallarta. The show, LUDÕ, is touted as "the most epic water dinner show ever created" and will feature all-new H2O-inspired circus acts in a theater designed specifically for the performance.

The announcement for LUDÕ was made at a special event held at VidantaWorld Nuevo Vallarta's sister resort VidantaWorld Riviera Maya to celebrate the 10th anniversary of JOYÀ, the Mexico-inspired Cirque du Soleil at their Yucatan resort. JOYÀ is not only Cirque du Soleil's first (and currently only) Latin American residency, but also the entertainment group's only dinner theater.
"The creation of LUDÕ is more than a milestone; it's a bold statement of Mexico's capacity to innovate and captivate on a global stage," said Iván Chávez, executive vice president of Grupo Vidanta, at the event.
LUDÕ will bring Cirque du Soleil to the west coast of Mexico in a new theater, designed specifically for the show, making it the first Cirque du Soleil residency with a venue built and tailor-made for their performances. Concept art for the theater, currently under construction, was unveiled at the Riviera Maya celebration, with images highlighting the aquariums that will line the walls of the theater to provide an immersive, underwater experience.
"This custom-built theater is a masterpiece of innovation, providing the ultimate canvas to showcase our boundless creativity," said Daniel Lamarre, Executive Vice-Chairman of Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group.
While details regarding the specific acts that will comprise LUDÕ are being kept tightly under wrap, Cirque du Soleil teased that "water flows through every aspect of the story." While Cirque du Soleil's legendary Las Vegas show O also features water, LUDÕ promises an evolution of the aquatic circus with groundbreaking new acts paired with an innovative dining menu.
Parade attended the press conference at the JOYÀ 10th anniversary celebration and got the scoop on what is sure to be one of the world's most exhilarating shows in Cirque du Soleil's already impressive lineup.
Here's everything we know about Cirque du Soleil's LUDÕ at VidantaWorld's Nuevo Vallarta.
What makes LUDÕ different from other Cirque du Soleil shows?
LUDÕ, like every Cirque du Soleil show, will be a completely unique experience. However, there are several new elements that set it apart from other Cirque du Soleil shows. First, LUDÕ will be an underwater-themed show unlike any other performance in the world, building on the groundbreaking aquatic acrobatics that Cirque du Soleil pioneered in their show O 25 years ago.
Second, LUDÕ will be Cirque du Soleil's second dinner theater experience, following the success of JOYÀ. The audience of LUDÕ will enjoy an innovative, themed, multi-course dinner while enjoying the immersive Cirque do Soleil acts.
Lastly, LUDÕ will be the first Cirque do Soleil show to move into a theater built specifically for the show. The 696-seat theater was painstakingly designed specifically for the show, meaning that audiences will be transported into a new world built completely for them.
