Christina Aguilera Wants to "Shield" Her Children "From the World"
While also giving them their freedom.
Christina Aguilera got emotional when speaking about her two kids, Summer Rain Rutler, whom she shares with fiancé Matthew Rutler, and son Max Liron from her marriage to Jordan Bratman. In a new interview with Glamour, the vocal powerhouse revealed that she is struggling to find the balance between protecting her kids and giving them their freedom as they get older—Summer is 10 years old and Max recently turned 16.
“I’ve seen so much so young,” she told the publication. “You just want the best for your kids.”
The singer added that it's a "weird moment" for her and her kids, as she feels she is “lecturing” and “overtalking” to them. At the end of the day, however, she explained that her concern just comes from a place of love.
“I love my son and my daughter so much, and you do want to shield and protect them from the world,” she said through tears. "But they have to learn their own lessons.”
Aguilera articulated that it's hard for her—as it is for any parent—to watch her kids grow up and change.
“I’ll never see that person again," she said. “They’re going to make their own choices and mistakes that define how they want to be. It’s such a layered, interesting thing to be a parent and watch these people, these humans, grow up.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Aguilera shared that as she's gotten older, she has learned to tune out the haters and ignore critics.
“I have a maturity now where I just don’t give a fuck about your opinion. I’m not going to take it on," she said. "It must be your responsibility to take up your space. Other people’s opinions of me are not my business."
She added that it's a mindset she hopes her kids adopt.
“Your kids trigger things in you that you don’t want them to go through,” she continued. “And it’s almost like you’re reliving this whole thing again.”
