Nada Al-Ahdal, makes her heartbreaking plea.
A video of a young Yemeni girl condemning the practice of child marriage has gone viral since being uploaded to YouTube on Monday.
Nada Al-Ahdal, 11, makes a brave plea to end arranged marriage, saying, “I am not an item for sale... I'm a human being and I would rather die than marry at this age.”
In the video, Al-Adhal says she ran away from home after her parents threatened to kill her if she refused to go through with the marriage they had planned for her. She took refuge with her uncle and aunt, but speaks against the practice on behalf of all children, saying that, “It is not normal for innocent children.”
Despite laws that set the minimum marriage age at 17, more than a quarter of Yemeni women are married before the age of 15, often given away by impoverished parents in return for a dowry.
