Cher says she's talked about third “Mamma Mia” movie, wants Meryl Streep to return

"I don't know when they're going to do it, but I know they're talking about it," the pop star says.

You won't feel blue because somewhere in the crowd there's...Cher.

The iconic singer, who just released her self-titled memoir, is open to returning for a third Mamma Mia film. "We're talking about it," she reveals to Entertainment Weekly. "I don't know when they're going to do it, but I know they're talking about it."

Cher joined the musical franchise for the second film, 2018's Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again. She played the late Donna's (Meryl Streep) mother, Ruby Sheridan, who shows up unannounced to Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) and company's reopening of Donna's Greek inn. Once there, she reconnects with her old flame, Fernando (Andy Garcia), and sings the ABBA hit, "Fernando" (obviously). Cher also led the credit sequence number to "Super Trouper."

"That was an amazing experience and really fun," Cher says of her time making the film. "And I took it on a lark because Mary Louise was in there, and I love her. The idea that I was her mother was hysterical."

Cher and Streep (whom she calls Mary Louise) have been friends for decades, dating back to their time starring together in 1983's Silkwood. In fact, they're so close that Cher is angling to get Streep back for a third film, despite the fact that her character was revealed to have died in the second movie.

"I keep saying, 'Meryl, you've got to come back,'" she adds. "'It'll be fun. You'll have a good time. You'll be able to sing.'"

Producer and protector of the Mamma Mia! flame, Judy Craymer, very much would like for both Cher and Streep to return. She previously said that she had an idea for a third film that would include opportunities for them both to reprise their roles.

Christine Baranski, who played Donna's bestie, Tanya, in both films, has also said that Craymer has told her the rough outline of plot details for a third film.

Initially adapted from the jukebox stage musical of the same name, the first Mamma Mia film follows a young woman, Sophie, who, unbeknownst to her mother, Donna, invites three men (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård) to her Greek wedding to determine which one is her father. The second film follows Sophie as she navigates her own relationship woes while attempting to reopen her mother's hotel; it also features a parallel storyline with a younger Donna as she meets the three potential dads.

Perhaps it's time for Cher's Ruby to get her own backstory?
