If You're Still Wondering What "Brat" Means, Charli XCX Explained It All During Her "SNL" Monologue
So, you survived "Brat summer" but you still don't even know what "Brat" even means. Are you hopeless? Fear not — Charli XCX is to the rescue.
The perpetually cool pop star pulled double duty on last night's SNL, and during her opening monologue she finally offered the definitive meaning of the buzzy word that adorns her truly star-making 2024 album.
“Honestly, it’s just like an attitude,” she said, referring to the word as a "vibe" before using a very specific example of what "brat" means to her.
"For example, the new Martha Stewart documentary: When Martha gets mad about an old magazine article and she says that she’s glad the journalist who wrote it is dead, that is brat. And then on Friday, when that exact journalist responded and said, ‘Hey I’m alive, bitch,’ that is extremely brat.”
Charli added that, to her, "brat" is also about "being vulnerable." She also called the SNL hosting gig a "dream come true," and even made a joke about how not everyone watching at home might know who she is.
"You might know me from my album Brat, but, don’t worry if you don’t,” Charli joked. “There is nothing wrong with being straight.”
