Champions League: U.S. viewers to get NFL Red Zone-like whiparound show on TV and streaming

UEFA Champions League fans in the United States may not have liked CBS’s decision to broadcast the most important matches from last season’s tournament exclusively on its streaming service, but they’re going to love the real-time highlight show the network has planned for the fast-approaching 2020-21 campaign.

CBS, which acquired the rights to the world’s most prestigious club competition from Turner Sports over the summer, will air a live whiparound show during each Champions League matchday, the network announced on Tuesday. Dubbed the “Golazo Show,” the new offering will look a lot like NFL Network’s “Red Zone” network — one-stop shopping for neutral fans who want to see the most important moments from a range of games being played simultaneously almost as soon as they occur.

The two-hour program will air beginning at 3 p.m. ET in the U.S., the same time six matches across Europe kick off. A half-hour pregame show will round up the each matchday’s two earlier games.

The “Golazo Show” will air live on both on terrestrial television, via the CBS Sports Network, and on CBS All Access, the network’s digital platform. No Champions League group stage matches — not even the two tilts featuring Lionel Messi’s Barcelona against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus — will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network or on CBS’s free-to-air television channel.

Individual matches involving specific teams will continue be available exclusively on the latter. Meantime, CBS Sports HQ, the network’s free online network, will feature pre- and post-match coverage.

The network’s coverage begins on Oct. 20.
