Catherine O’Hara Teases Her ‘Crazy and Thrilling’ Scene with Michael Keaton in “Beetlejuice 2” (Exclusive)
"Beetlejuice has aged very well," jokes O'Hara, who filmed the original movie more than three decades ago
Catherine O’Hara is excited to have some one-on-one time with Beetlejuice himself in the upcoming sequel to the 1988 comedy.
Talking with PEOPLE about the highly anticipated Beetlejuice 2, which is due in theaters this September, O’Hara says she was particularly excited to film a scene with Michael Keaton, who plays the titular demon.
“I had a little two person moment with Michael as Beetlejuice. I'd been in the first movie in group scenes with Michael, but in this, I had an actual moment where the two of us just. And it was just so crazy and thrilling, really to just be face-to-face with Beetlejuice.”
“He looks the same,” she jokes. “Beetlejuice has aged very well.”
O’Hara, who’s now costarring with Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston and John Cena in the new action-comedy Argylle, is sadly mum on other details on Beetlejuice 2. “I don’t want to blow it for anyone,” she says. “I don’t want to spoil the fun for anyone.”

In the original movie, directed by Tim Burton, O’Hara played eccentric Delia Deetz, who moves into a charming New England home with her husband Charles (Jeffrey Jones) and his moody daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder).
The ghosts of the previous owners Barbara and Adam (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) want the Deetzes out of the house, and try to scare them away. When their efforts fail, they summon the mischievous and devious Beetlejuice (Keaton) to assist them, which doesn't go exactly as planned.

“It was really fun. It was really fun,” O’Hara says of filming the first movie. “And doing this last Beetlejuice was really fun too. I know [Burton] really wanted to get that feeling back on a set, and he got it.”
They were even able to film at the same location in Vermont, where the Deetzes’ house stood. “The exact same hill. I can't believe it exists still. It hasn't been developed, overdeveloped," she says.
O’Hara was delighted to reunite with her former costars Keaton and Ryder, but she hasn’t kept in regular touch with them for some time. She says actor Glen Shaddix, who played Delia’s friend Otho in the first film, was the “social convener.” Shadix died in 2010.
“He really was the director of the cast. He kept us together for years afterwards, after we finished shooting,” she says.
“I would see Michael Keaton once in a while at a party or something, and we'd text. After I saw him do some great work. I would text him, congratulations, whatever. And I love him; he's just so funny. He's a great improviser too. Any bit, he's just nonstop funny in such a relaxed, great natural way,” O’Hara adds.
She would only see Ryder “once in a blue moon at something. Always sweet,” O’Hara continues.
New cast members Jenna Ortega and Monica Bellucci join the old guard. PEOPLE previously reported that Ortega plays the daughter of Ryder’s character, and Bellucci plays Beetlejuice’s wife.
“Jenna Ortega's great. Love her. What a cool young woman. Wow,” says O’Hara.
