“Catfish” host Nev Schulman is 'lucky to be alive' after breaking his neck in bike accident: 'I'm not paralyzed'

"It's hard to feel sorry for myself when I hear from the doctors about how many people with similar injuries will never walk again."

Nev Schulman is feeling "lucky" to be alive after breaking his neck in a major bicycle accident.

In a Saturday Instagram post, the Catfish: The TV Show host opened up about the Monday incident that occurred while he was on his way to get his son from school. Schulman included photos of the injury and video from the hospital, alongside a warning for those who might find the content "unsettling."

“I never made it to pick up my son from school on the bike,” Schulman captioned the post. “In fact in some ways, I’m glad I didn’t. I was alone on impact. Me and the truck. And then I guess the pavement.”

He continued, “I was alone and unconscious. And then conscious. Maybe I was fine (I wasn’t). Maybe I can still do my long run on Thursday (I couldn’t).”

Schulman went on to explain that he is thankfully "not paralyzed" but suffered stable fractures in his neck. “I broke my neck. C5 and C6 to be exact,” he wrote. “My hands were a question mark there for a minute but the human body is incredible and so are HUMANS. The incredible knowledge and care from everyone in the medical community has been so remarkable.”

He added, "It’s hard to feel sorry for myself when I hear from the doctors about how many people with similar injuries will never walk again.”

Included in the Instagram carousel are images of Schulman after being hospitalized and a video of his three kids, who he shares with wife Laura Perlongo, coming to visit. He also included a photo of his purplish surgery scar and X-rays of the injury to his spine.

One video sees Schulman being helped to his feet by physical therapists to practice walking while another sees him high five a staff member after making his way down a hallway.

The Dancing With the Stars alum said the accident put in perspective how "life can change in an instant” and made him extra grateful for memories made during a spontaneous Sunday family fishing trip.

"I’m lucky to be here, alive, standing and hugging my family, projected to make a full recovery,” he wrote. “I’m really starting to understand the meaning of gratitude. For the big and little things before the accident, and now everything moving forward. We hadn’t planned on fishing last Sunday and my instinct was to say no to scramble-planning a day trip, but looking back a week later, I’m so glad I said yes."
