Carrie Bickmore showered with gifts as she says farewell to The Project

In an emotional episode last night, Carrie Bickmore bid farewell to the Project and fellow panellists before stepping away from the desk to go on maternity leave.

The 37-year-old who is only weeks away from the arrival of her third child, took to Instagram to announce she is ready to take her “head out of the news cycle” and focus on the new bub.

Alongside Carrie, the photo included co-hosts Waleed Aly, Peter Helliar and Rachel Corbett who spent the episode showering her with hilarious baby gifts including a framed picture of the three of them with dummies in their mouth.

“My last night on the desk. Maternity leave is such a strange time.” Carrie started her post.

“I always feel genuinely sad leaving a job I love and work-family who I genuinely enjoy spending time with but on the other hand I am so excited and (slightly terrified!!) heading off to have another bub and spend precious time with my beautiful family.”

“I am looking forward to having my head out of the news cycle and into smelly nappies. See you back on the desk next year,” she continued.

During the episode, Carrie brought up a conversation she had had with her husband Chris Walker one night about whether she would swap out the pain, sickness and stretch marks and let him be the one to carry the baby (if that was possible).

Carrie admitted that she was certainly tempted by the idea, yet later concluded, “No I wouldn’t swap it, it’s an incredible gift that despite all of that, I would do it in a heartbeat.”

So now Carrie, her husband along with their three-year-old daughter Evie and her 11-year-old son Oliver, whom she had with her late husband Greg Lange, are all eagerly awaiting for the arrival of the newest member of the family.
